Worth it going direct with nutra straightsale adv?

When it comes to going direct with advertisers I'm pretty inexperienced and am seeking some advice.

I would think the offer being a straightsale I'd be at much less risk than going direct with trials, something I don't have the stomach for.

I do work with one other straightsale advertiser currently, but I've also known their AM for years and they're in the same city as me.

Just messaged this one.

Doing low 4 figure/day in revenue, break-even, and feel confident I can make it profitable and scale it a lot. Cutting out the networks 10-15% cut would be huge.

What are some things I should know?

It comes down to what you already mentioned, you need to know who you are working with. Networks do care about their reputation, direct advertisers can fly away with screwing an affiliate or two... it helps when they have an in-house affiliate program.

Going direct and saving the 10/20/30% margin can literally save a campaign, but the most important part is to get paid. It's all about doing the due diligence, search industry forums, look for negative experience ... or positive. Use your social network and ask about them ... if they attend conferences and pay for booths, that's always a good signal.

In some cases, I was able to enter a "pre-paid" deal. That always helped too. Or at least prompt payments. Though in reality, direct advertisers are usually pretty slow with payouts...

To wrap it up, based on my experience, this always worked the best for me :

1. check on forums, google search, my contacts
2. looking for public appearance ... forums, conferences, chat groups
3. prompt communication and the will to do custom payment terms

In my experience network margins are almost always bigger than you thought they would be. So there is plenty of extra money to be made by going directly. I think on most campaigns networks are netting more then the affiliate that risks the money in reality.

But don't do it unless they will pay you bi-weekly at least and ideally prepay. If you take net 30 terms there is a very good chance you will get stiffed an entire months commission within the year. Most affiliates simply do not have the connections/reputation to "blacklist" an advertiser effectively IE they won't be scared not to pay you. Advertisers know if they get blacklisted by a reputable network owner it will be very difficult to get any credit terms from big networks again.

It's kind of a surprise for me why you even bother with trials. Haven't got any luck with them, EVER.
But maybe that's just me and I don't know how to do it right.
That being said, same niches on cash-on-delivery scheme work rather well, even though I'm not sure how the audience could be different here. We ain't talking about US/CA, of course. Europe, though, shows some nice numbers.

Hey as a direct advertiser myself I would comment the following:

a, lets talk about buying some of your sales hehe
b, when going direct us advertisers want to save also, so do not always assume you will make the difference yourself it needs to be a win-win. If you send us subpar traffic and stop sending all together with a network we can get credit as it is their reputation on the line. When we are direct and you walk away recourse becomes extremely difficult (truthfully for both sides). We can however open up a completely new level of communication and cooperation that can be super valuable to both sides, information can flow pretty well.

Before approaching the advertiser directly, I would try to get a good bump from the network first.

It is true that networks keep a good margin, but one thing to note is that even when quality is not that good, networks can cover it up for you, and as matuloo said, getting paid is really important.

As you mentioned above, when you know the advertiser for years and can reach them in person easily is good. When not, it’s another story and risks are much higher, so better play it safe.

COD is absolutely huge in Europe, especially the central and eastern part ... Pretty much nobody pays upfront these days, everyone wants COD. The last store I helped to setup in Slovakia and Czech. Republic had like 90% of COD orders, only 10% or paid using a CC or wire. It's not really possible to run a successful ecom store or nutra selling operation without offering COD in the region.

As an advertiser I prefer working directly with affiliates for a number of reasons. 1) Ability to communicate directly and timely manner is one of the most important reasons. Nothing worse than playing the telephone game with a network in the middle when something needs to be communicated. 2) Generally both the pub and the advertiser can benefit financially and narrow the gap on the network rip as long as their is mutual trust and transparency.

If you work on Nutra trial, you need better traffic quality & retention.
Straight sale just go and scale it.
BTW, we have Nutra straight sale campaigns as well.
