Too generic to be able to give some advice

What kind of project?

What are you trying to manage?

What do you mean by visual?

I'll start with the easy answer

We're currently using Jira by Atlassian. It's great and costs very little

Downside it's that it can take a while to figure out and it tends to be organized mostly around lists - ie if you want to go in and have a quick visual overview of how a project is going, you can't really do it

So am looking for a tool that allows you to see without too much config what tasks are preventing others from progressing (dependencies), overdue tasks, a gantt diagram etc

It's a multitude of projects, for example the launch of a new blog, a new sales funnel, launch of bitcoin / crypto affiliate program on Clickbank, etc

We'd have in-house staff working on the tool, the remote workers on payroll and the per-project freelancers

Most importantly, I need a feature that automatically flags to me or someone else if a task is overdue

Hope this (kind of) clarifies the question!

Looks like Jira is what you are looking for then .

It may look basic, but what you are looking for is not the simplest use case. So yeah it will take a couple of weeks to understand/configure Jira for your needs but you can do all that you mentioned above in Jira (deadlines, task dependencies, a lot of different reporting that show the progress, etc).

You might want to check out Asana. I've seen it in use on some pretty significant projects, and it's pretty well suited to the use case you describe.

If you want to stick with Jira and your looking for a great overview try the addons BigPicture or Structure. Structure is pretty complex and only works on Jira Server, but BigPicture works on both Server and Cloud (a little limited but good enough) and seems to be the choice most people go with after testing both.

I used Jira for a while but ended up switching back to Asana in the end

Interesting...out of curiosity, why did you switch back to Asana in the end?

mainly because Jiras way of doing things can be too complicated and I like the way Asana uses lists / kanbans
