Just tried the new SEARCH function on STM! (14)

Just tried the new SEARCH function on STM!

Holy.

Crap.

The old search used to suck so bad, if a post was not on the leaderboards, I would not even try to look for it. That was like trying to draw blood from stone.

But the new search.

Wow.

The new search rocks!

I can actually find the 2 year old post from caurmen that I have been looking for over the past few weeks.

Amy has done a great job with configuring it to work the way it does now indeed! I know she is looking into ways to make it even more user friendly, some sorting options or date stamps should be added shortly. Definitely a big improvement from the past search function

Aw thank you both kindly! I can't take all the credit - zeno did most of the work in configuring the algorithm. I've only tweaked it and arranged for deployment.

But yes - slight improvements are in the works!

Agree with cmdeal that it's SO much better than the default forum search - I've wasted so much time in the past looking for posts I needed to refer people to.

While I agree it is better than the previous search there are a couple things I think would be helpful for the next update. First off it would be awesome if there was an extra column that had the date - for example I just searched "cloaking" and the 2nd thread was 2014 but you can't tell how old it is until you are in the thread. In this case it was still relevant but in the fast changing world of AM it easily may not have been. With the previous search I often would look at the dates to find the newest one to make sure it had the most up to date and relevant information. secondly, not sure how easy this is but in that first page there was at least one thread that was dead and said "Invalid Thread specified" (its the most popular thread on that first search page - most views, most up votes etc) - if there is no information would it be possible to have it not show up in the search? Lastly, would be it be possible to have an option to arrange the search page via the headings (amount of likes, replies, category etc)? This would be more functional once you have date showing up so you could sort by newest stuff first (or most liked etc). Again - its way better than the old one so i'm not trying to hate but just wanted to give some feedback. Cheers!

All very good suggestions, and pretty much all have been discussed by the mod team in the background already... the problem is the limitations of the plugins used, but as long as it's at least remotely possible to add these functions, it will be taken care of

Keep em coming guys!

Love the new search!

After adding the date of the post it will be killer.

Loving the new search as well, thanks for the hard work! Definitely noticing more relevant results.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

The dead threads will be removed from the results very soon.

Adding the date is a wonderful suggestion - I'm checking with our dev team to see if it can be implemented.

Regarding sorting by date/thanks/etc. - matuloo has suggested that from the start, but unfortunately it's not something we can implement without extensive modification of the new search script. We have a list of suggested changes, and some of them may be implemented when our dev team is freed up from more urgent tasks. So this feature has a chance of happening in the future.

Again - thank you for taking the time to provide feedback! Very useful and much appreciated!

Thank you so much, it's a blast.

I have a question. When I put something in the search area on top it sends me to a page that has a bar at the bottom that says "Enter Search Query Below", which I do again and it doesn't do anything or even go to find my search query.

That's news to us!

Could you please show some screenshots if possible?

Also - which device, operating system and browser are you using?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Amy it's working now, I just tried from my home computer and it worked and showed the results under the search bar. When I tried it earlier I was at work, it may have been rules of the firewall we have. But it's working and I like the new format.

The new search is hella fast in comparison to the VBulletin search and does a much better job of figuring out relevancy, letting you search for small words, etc.

On the other hand it is missing the ability to let you search in a specific category/subforum only, although keywords in the category/subforum name will of course increase likelihood of getting what you want.

The easiest way for us to improve it and make tweaks is through direct feedback. So if it is missing things you really want, or in some cases gives you terrible results, just complain here and we'll start tinkering :-)
