Exact Age Vs Non Exact Age [Facebook]

Hey guys, im just after some feedback on what i've noticed....

Example:

25-50 EXACT / Male / Keywords / Single / Interested In Females - 390K Reach

26 - 49 NON-EXACT / Male / Keywords / Single / Interested In Females - 990K Reach

-------

To my understanding or with how facebook explain non exact targets people who are about to have their birthday on the age you targetted i.e 1 year below or above what you have targetted.... however the numbers dont add up.

Ive gone through all the years dropping 1 year and adding 1 year on top age on EXACT until i hit the avg i got for NON EXACT and i found it was about 4/5 YEARS!!!! either side of the age.

Whats your views

--------------

Update:-

Just done another test and i can confirm that it has a 5 year addon each way i.e

(NON EXACT) 35 - 35 US Male Keywords Single = 138K

(EXACT) 30 - 40 US Male Keywords Single = 138K

So be careful when using non exact as it adds on 5 years both ways!!!!! tut tut fb

Don't get roped into believing it's just a year below or nearly their bday etc

My understanding, from reading what it says on fb, was same as yours; that removing exact age targeting would just add people who were at most 1 year younger or older.

Surprising that it goes as far as 4-5 years though.

I wonder how much cheaper those clicks outside the range are, and I wonder if it's based on how large your age range is in the first place? For example, if you choose 25-30, whether it will still give you 4-5 years either side, or if it reduces it.

With a bit of testing and thinking, there could be a way to manipulate this to provide much cheaper clicks (ie. target outside of your desired age range, knowing that you'll target it anyway).

yeah i see what your saying but saying that it will def piss your roi up the wall if your running stuff age specific... i.e 25+ Dating apps not knowing your hitting 26 minus 5 years lol

For sure. I just meant if there was a way of knowing what spread of ages you would be hitting. ie. for a 25+ offer, if you could target 30-35, but not choose exact and still suck up some cheap 25-30 and 35-40 clicks....

yeah i see what your saying mate definately. I'm just shocked if they do make it around 4/5 years outside the age on non exact

looks like what you said Nick matches what i said i.e if im targetting 25-50 exact, if you try 30-50 non exact you will get pretty much same reach but suggestives are pretty much the same

Good find, I have a dating campaign pending which is 25+ only, by switching to exact the demo reach dropped like 80k people. Those 80k could not have converted so woud have been a complete waste and could have killed my epc.

Also say they each saw my ad 3-5 times each thats a shit load of impressions which could have been wasted and brought down my ctr = higher cpc.

I smell a case study idea! It would be great to find out if you targeted 35yr old (non exact) and then creating an identical campaign targeting 30 - 40 (exact).

Would conversions differ much. If so, why?

Would one campaign have a much lower CPC than the other.

Testing features like these get you ahead of the affiliate pack.
