What it takes to have a good adult campaign

As the title says, what does it take to have a good adult campaign?

I am running banners on t2 and t3 geos
Banners, LP, offer all ripped from adplexity adult
I'm using a mass targeting strategy on exoclick
desktop + mobile, wifi + carrier, basically all targeting is on

Offer is proven to convert on adplexity and from recommendations of account manager
I am only using 1 lander, and it is one of the most frequently seen on adplexity
Banners I am just running 4-5 variations of 300x250

How many banner creatives do you use for a general test, and which variable in the campaign do you optimize first?

Also what's a good CTR to have for the banners?

Is this a dating offer or something else?

Adult Nutra offers, adult COD

edit: my banners have 0.4% CTR. spent 1x payout for each banner, with 0 conv
the offer is performing well on adplexity and on my account manager's top offers list though
Any advice from here? Is it that adult offers are more competitive than other traffic sources, like mainstream display, native, pop, etc?

Adult nutra is more complicated than dating for example, and the approach you chose is not the best too.

You need to split it up a bit, you shouldn't target desktop, mobile, wifi, carriers ... all in one campaign. Each of these targets have different bids, I would suggest to pick just one to start with, for example just desktop OR mobile wifi... In any case, since you are on exoclick, you need to either target just the premium spots or you need to run a BOT test. In order to convert, you need real traffic ... and optimizing banners in a campaign without cutting out the worst placements first, is pointless.

Adult is competitive, but what isn't? People are making money in it, so you can too ... but you need to plan it better before a restart.

Hey! We hoped to contribute a little bit more to this discussion

The strategy depends on the business model. Is it PPS or PPL?

With PPL, it's easier to acquire data and to optimize without investing too much. PPS however is a bit more difficult and it’s necessary to invest substantially more to get objective data.

A mass targeting strategy could be dangerous because you will get traffic from many different ad spots, above and below the fold. CTRs and CRs could vary drastically. The idea behind the mass strategy is to acquire a lot of data quickly; like a funnel, you get a lot of cheap impressions and clicks and use the data acquired to create lists of winners and losers.

Use CPC campaigns and stay on top of the statistics to quickly blacklist any odd CTRs and obviously non-converting sources. Logically you will use the postback API to follow conversions directly in your account and optimize banners and Landing pages easily. Rotating a dozen banners and a couple LP's is the best way to go. Keep it fresh.

Create separate campaigns per geo with the best sources, increase your CPC or switch to CPM or Dynamic CPM in order to grab more traffic and better quality impressions. Frequency capping will of course increase quality too. This basic strategy is commonly used by media buyers for nutra (penis pills) or dating.

As for the avg CTR%, it's very hard to tell since it depends on every source and ad spot. The best way is to ask your sales rep about the average CTRs they see for a specific geo and ad spot. It will give you an idea of the performance of your marketing. Also please keep in mind that taking banners from Adplexity means that these banner have been seen millions of times already making many users blind to them.

To answer to the second part, I think it depends on the sources and ad spots you are getting traffic from and the price you paid. Yes, adult is very competitive. Perhaps you should ask your account manager what are the top converting geos + OS + browser for this offer. It would be interesting to test a separate campaign with such targeting.
