What's wrong with Voluum these days ?

Hey guys,

I've been a quite happy Voluum customer but these days, they are doing all sorts of BS :

- they change URL parameters : voluumdata is not used anymore... then they use "eda" a couple days, then they use "cep", off course none of this is done notifying their users (neither for the first change, nor for the second, nor for the third...), good job guys
=> needless to say that if you used voluumdata to reroute organic traffic, you've lost all that traffic too and probably created an endless loop like I did with the script they provided...

- and then this morning, the best surprise: ohhh one of my custom domain isn't working anymore (actually it's not working since yesterday...), all traffic from this morning and yesterday afternoon is routed to... nowhere "domain blablabla is not associated with your account". I guarantee you that I didn't delete this domain by my own...

Pretty furious at Voluum, hopefully they change their way of doing things ASAP or I'll definitely move elsewhere again.

Cheers,

We apologize for those temporary inconveniences. We made these changes to answer users' demand for shorter parameters, old ones weren't working correct in some browser versions. "Voluumdata" and "eda" parameters will soon be deprecated, the information about that were added to your lander URLs. We can ensure you though that these parameters will still be active for ~1 week (and the initial cookie's lifetime is much shorter).

Talking about the issue with the custom domain: please, contact our support. Such cases need investigation, which is not possible on forums. We can ensure you that the stable performance of traffic tracking is as important for us as it is for you.

just wanted to ask, what do these parameters affect? im seeing them in the URL of landers in spytools but other than that, how does it affect my current campaigns and is there anything needed to be done?

Those parameters were used to pass the information, used for the correct redirection to your campaign links. It affects only people who are using special scripts containing this data. If you are not using anything, you won't be affected at all.

You’re obviously aware that this change would cause massive impact to those with “special scripts”, so was it a conscious decision not to post any updates or is “fuck the customer” new company policy?

Going forward, what’s the best way for us to get notified prior to changes like this being made? Especially around the API...

Hi @nickpeplow,

To be completely honest - we didn't think that this change would have such a big impact. Before releasing the change that removed "voluumdata" from URLs, we contacted via email all the people that we thought could be affected - all of those that we could find in our support history, to whom we have sent an example of the script that handles organic traffic. We've known that due to the fact that we have recently switched support system we might miss someone, but due to importance of the changes we have had to proceed with the update (rolling it out to some percentage of all customers).

We can assure you that we are learning from our own mistakes - so from now on, every update like this will be announced via email, possibly even within Voluum panel.

All the changes related to domains are a result of the development of a new feature, that one of our teams have been working on for over 6 months already. Our goal is to make it impossible to corelate multiple campaigns found online with one affiliate, and also to further secure your tracking domain. With the new domain system in place, every account will have its own dedicated domain - no longer a voluumtrk.com subdomain - but a standalone top-level domain, with SSL certifiate included. It will be possible to CNAME your own custom domain to the dedicated one, and we are also considering a possibility to add a new domain directly into Voluum (instead of CNAME'ing).

"Voluumdata" in the landing page has been encrypted so that landing page URL no longer contains the word 'voluum', and for those that were decoding BASE64 to get offer.id - we've added a new token - {offer.id}.

The parameter in an encrypted form will stay - it is being used as a fallback, in case there's no referer, and no cookie present (based on "voluumdata" contents we are still able to track clicks and redirect visitors properly).

I got Voluum quite recently, and I did get a dedicated domain included in it which I am using for my tracking links. I applied for SSL certification as well. This domain and SSL will remain active as long as I use Voluum right? All my traffic will be using that dedicated domain from now.

Yes, that's right, the domain and SSL certificate are already paid for and remain active, if your Voluum subscription will still be active by the time the domain expires, we will renew it automatically.

Apologies for this, this was our mistake - won't happen again. All clients will be notified in the panel about any upcoming changes that may affect their media buying moving forward.

Looks like today they changed something with their GEOIP DB. :/

Totally broken my rules and redirected all traffic to other paths.

Watch out.

UPDATE: Issue has been resolved.

Hey, Erik!

We indeed had some problems with GeoIP today during the daytime. However, we want to ensure you, that everything is resolved now. The problem was caused by the changes made by one of our external databases. We apologize on this matter and will make all efforts to avoid such situations in the future.
