Is manual backlinking for SEO still a legitimate way to boost ranks?

Basically my plan is to build a long-term eComm store, not just using FB paid traffic. Wanna do SEO, here's my plan: content marketing, Youtube videos, angling to obtain influencers (instagram, magazines, press releases etc).

My question: Is manual backlinking still a legit way to help with rankings? Not planning on doing it in a spammy way...just posting on blogs, forums, reddit with backlinks after offering high value comments.

A lot of people say it's pointless and should invest in PBNs instead...but isn't that short term churn and burn BH?

Or is it better to just avoid backlinking altogether and let it happen 100% organically by users loving your content & sharing it?

Yes, backlinks still work. Just remember that social signals (backlinks) carry weight too. You can buy links on a PBN or build one out yourself depending on your timeline and budget. Post content on a blog on your site.

100% organic is a joke. There are only so many viral posts you can come up with. Look up guys like Jacob King and Grindstone. These guys share some good stuff.

Of course it's still valid, manual backlink building can have a massive impact ... even better if you can attract natural links to the content you post. Reviews of products, price comparisons ... not sure what niche you are in, but DIY style videos/articles, moding/tweaking, sample uses of goods ... these can attract quite some love on social media.

PBNs can deliver quick results, but they also tend to go down all at once, I mean all the sites within a PBN will often get flagged at once ... so there goes the effect of such links.

With anything you 're building for the long run, make PBNs or anything similar, just a minor part of your strategy. So when it get's flagged and the penalties start to spread, you're effected as low as possible. Or at least don't buy all your links from one PBN, diversify!
