How... On Earth... You Hire Good Tech Guys?

Guys,

I don't know what I'm missing ... but here are the current stats:

Proposals: 20

question: "how you do x and do you understand why it's important" -- x is described in the longer question.

number of people who answered both questions: 0
number of people who went teaching me about something weird: 6-7
number of people that didn't read the question or went answering something completely unrelated: 13-14

Now - I need a guy who knows php, english and html -- how hard can it be?

But I need him to be fast, has good logic and a heart of a warrior.

Loyal as a dog. Aggressive like a pitbull.

I am willing to pay any fucking reasonable price... I went way over industry standards.. below... at... and still idiot after idiot.. they can't sign the contract right in the first attempt.

Help.

Please. Or I'll start flying to meet one of my coders at random and beat the shit out of them just as a sign of my mental relaxation. I have one on my list already.

(for mods: I won't! Everyone is physically safe around me

Great tool for finding contractors yourself: https://sourcing.io

Also finding talent through GitHub is usually a good idea (and free)

Managed Services:
10xManagement - https://www.10xmanagement.com
TopTal - https://www.toptal.com - (High-End, More Expensive.)
HoneyPot - https://www.honeypot.io (EU)
HackerRank - https://www.hackerrank.com/work

Didn't try but worth looking at:
https://wearehirable.com
https://blitz.com
https://www.homerun.co

Good tech guys are extremely hard to find... been there, done that I finally found one coder that speaks the same language as I do, and I won't let him go

Good luck on finding the right guy

Hah, that's a very standard scenario when trying to hire devs and asking those questions. A lot will give completely irrelevant replies hoping the employer will be dumb enough to either not notice or see something else in their reply which magically makes them a viable candidate.

If you're ready to pay over industry standards, then I'd say shortlist a bunch and hunt them down. Github is a one of the better places to find dev talent.

If you don't speak the dev's language, you have little chance of hiring a really good one. And by language I mean showing them you understand the technical aspect of things and understand why tech is important.

Any half-decent dev wants to become an excellent dev so they will look for opportunities to learn in your company. If you don't show that, most devs will pass and go for a more tech focused company/team.

Most developers have a very different mindset compared to a business person and especially compared to a creative marketer, at least from my experience. You need to learn about them and adjust to it if you want good developers for the long term. For the short term, you can get them with paying a very high salary but that will only keep them around temporarily, til something better comes up.

I would give StackOverflow a go.

They have a paid option that let's you browse talent in the area you need.

All suggestions on this thread are solid. Majority of the quality guys in our experience rarely make proposals on upwork (unlikely the right person is browsing at the time you post the job).

Our tactic to find the best people is to use related keywords to a similar software / github repo (so they've worked on something very similar) and invite them via upwork. Put in a request to upwork support to get an increase on the daily invite limit, you'll need it.

Exactly - they can't even read. Thanks for Github recommendation.

The worst of all - I DO speak their language, but I DON'T WANT TO. IT takes my time from strategy.

With Stack Overflow I hired the second most retarded, slowest, tech guy on the planet... just for comparison: below average guy from UpWork: 4 hrs + 1.5hrs of mistakes fixing --- that guy 12 days!

Thank you all for valuable recommendations - you actually solved my challenge and gave me a lift to the next level when I needed it. Grateful!
