Running trials VS VSL

Are there any clear differences in ROI and performance when running trials vs VSL?

I heard from my AM that trials generally need a higher budget as the cancellation rate is high?
Anyone can give any insights on this?

I'm not sure about the terminology here, VSL means Video Sales Letter as far as I know - so user watches a video that tries to sell him something, while Trial is a conversion point - so first "dose" of something for free, then a monthly payment, for example.

Even a VSL sequence can end with a trial offer... so I'm kinda lost here. Can you specify the offer types more?

A VSL is a type of sales page.
A trial offer is a type of payment method.
They are not mutually exclusive.
The question doesn't make sense.

I mean advertorials vs VSLs

So advertorials are supposed to require larger budget than VSLs... or the other way around ... please be more specific with your question, I don't want to guess and give you bogus answers.

On a side note, both of these are just sales page types, as johnaff mentioned above too... so their performance, retention and other performance data largely depends on the content/message and the presentation ... it's quite hard to generalize here.
