How are you able to translate your store to all those geos?

Google translate + proofreading on Fiverr for 5-10$ by a native speaker

Even just targeting those countries and English as a language has worked well for us. Won't see the same results as you would with translations, but makes it very easy to test internationally.

I'm assuming this is for navigating through the store

But for ad creatives on fb:

When you target geo's in EU like France or Germany, do you make a brand new ad in their native language? Or does just using the english ad work better?
I'm asking because I never see the bigger stores/facebook fanpages advertise in a non-English language

Shipping to other geos gives you the opportunity to start making money easier/faster since there will be less competition.

In addition, geos outside of the USA aren't so chargeback crazy, and they tend to be more patient when it comes to shipping since they aren't spoiled with amazon prime few hour shipping options.

I'm talking creatives. Having English only creatives and targeting EU countries (with English as language targeting) has worked very well for us and makes scaling incredibly easy. I'm sure creating creatives in their native language and targeting said language would most likely perform better as long as your website is also translated, but we haven't bothered.

Avoid the US and UK if you launch a new store. Go for Spain/LATAM, Germany/Austria or France/Belgium - all huge markets, not a lot of competition, buyers with a lot of money/credit cards/spending power

@alexdmark - if English already works, imagine in the native language of the country and how much better you can still do

@cbrughmans yeah it's definitely in the pipeline. How do you handle translations for multiple languages on your site? Use some sort of javascript plugin or do you just duplicate the sites on different domains and have a separate one for each language?

There's apps on Shopify for that so that it detects the browser language of the user and automatically changes the language.

For translations, take the english version, then:
1. Go to google translate and translate into french/spanish/german
2. Go to fiverr.com and pay 5-10$ to let a native speaker proofread it and make the final corrections

Hey!

What Shopify app would you recommend to use for automatically changing the language?

I'm also looking into translation Apps - but the so far haven't found anything that's Safe to use.

Beware of downloading and installing "Automatic Translations Apps" (some of them don't even seem to do that completely) --- From the looks of it, there's several people who had their whole websites screwed up because the apps directly edit and replace your .liquid code

Here are some prominent complaints:

1. Langify made Shopify store no longer functional ("My ADD TO CART BUTTON DOESN'T WORK - Langify Customer" )

2. You NEED to backup your theme or face the consequences if and when the app screws it up

3. Shady links left on the Shopify store, funnelling traffic back to the apps website - Or Leaving their Branding elements IN your design and shopify owners need to manually remove them even after deleting the app

4. App does is not easily uninstalled - screwing up the coding ( again, back up your current version)

5. Support on Bablic and Langify seem helpful, but some cases them where the vendor just closes their eyes on the fact that they screwed up someones business with their half-baked coding

HOWEVER - There are also lot's of good reviews on some... BUT these are some of the instances where the customer got alot more than they bargained for..

Personally - I was going to download an App today, but decided to take another avenue - The harder route of manually setting up translations in this case seems to be the safe route. ALSO - it's the only 100% Perfect way to translate.

The metric that's important here is the Actual amount of people that use said language. As far as quality ---- Minority languages get less attention to than german or french for instance.

This is just my opinion, but as someone who studies languages and is familiar with the performance of Translation algorithms of Translating, for example: English ----> German VS English -----> Bulgarian ---- The more minority the language, the less dependant you can be on what's currently available as "Automatic Translation Solutions".

English to Russian translations are pretty good (near perfect often) - English to bulgarian is TERRIBLE..... even though BG is much easier of a language than russian with 50% mutual Vocabulary and much less grammar.

My two cents.

Lot's of you are probably looking into this and I'll post any solution i might find, but for now I"m going with the Fiverr + hard work method.

Hi Guys - I am working on creating an international Shopify store since the US market is pretty saturated. Initially I am thinking of just testing out english speaking people and later I have plans to translate the pages using the recommendation from cbrughmans (Google Translate + Fiverr). However I am struggling with some questions around payment+pricing. I'd appreciate if somebody can share some insight based on their experience running an international store.

  1. What is the best way to handle payment for multiple countries? I have installed the App (Best Currency Converter) which will show the currency based on the location of the user. However since Shopify can only have 1 currency at checkout, does it negatively affect the user experience and result in a lot of abandoned shopping carts?
  2. How do you create storewide pricing for different countries considering the shipping cost is different? I see a lot of the stores offering Free Shipping which I want to do as well, but how are these stores able to come up with a storewide pricing with free shipping for multiple countries?

I do apologize if these questions have been answered in another thread as I did try to search for it.
