Audience too large?

Hey there,

The Cookbook says roughly 1 million+ in a Facebook group is a good indication of a niche being too large.

Was wondering whether this figure is referring to actual Facebook groups related to your niche (eg: a group like 'Professional Bodybuilding Association')...

Or to the 'monthly active people' in Facebook Audience Insights tool (at the top of the page), once you've drilled down to your niche using filters like age, income, interests, geo etc.

One of my ideas shows 1mil - 1.5mil active users per month on the Insights Tool - although I can't find actual tangible Facebook groups with any number near that - most are like 10k members.

Which one was the Cookbook referring to? monthly active users or actual FB groups?

For your interest targeting you normally want to test out 500k-1m users for your audience size if you're running a campaign to cold traffic, which are people who have never ever been to your store or know about you. Of course that number is just a ballpark, I feel like a lot of high level people play with a variety of audience sizes, just know that you need to have enough for if you ever have to scale up your winning campaign. So like 50k-100K for initial testing is kinda weak sauce.

All of the other targeting stuff like income, behavior and the other random stuff might be good to test out down the line when you have money to play with but majority of the time you'll go with geo, age and interest targeting.

For your interest targeting try: broad audiences (lookalike), magazines, stores, celebrities, brands, events, movies, websites, fan pages and so on.

Hope that helps.

Ah, I saw the cookbook section that you're referring to. I'm pretty sure caurmen is referring to monthly active users, since he talks about defining 'groups' in terms of interests. Maybe the term audience would have been clearer.

Yep, agreed. It makes more sense to do the 1mil + 'rule' on the "monthly active users", as this is raw data indicating interest in the area. Actual groups can sometimes be hard to find or ambiguous.
