Do simple landers still work? (4)

Do simple landers still work?

So on one end I see lots of tutorials that make it clear you need lots of landers to test, sending an offer out alone isn't going to cut it anymore. No problem I did PPC for years and can bust out a simple page with a nice header, pretty background with banner and angle/call to action. But that's all, a static simple landing page. That I can understand making 8 or 10 and ABtesting.

But I got adplexity and it seems that every single lander is a gimicky one (and the same cluster of gimicky ones so I guess they work ), like the iphone spinner but more than just that, there's also the same kind of survey system that asks you 4 different questions and shows you the free products your eligible for (and 2 always greyed to show scarcity etc). Honestly I know they work but A. I hate these kind of landers just personally but that doesn't matter B. They are the only ones I see on adplexity so either they don't work since everyone's trying them or they will soon cease to.

And I know you are supposed to put your own twist but with landers like that with so much to them I can't imagine making like 6 different kind of gimicky ones, a spinner, a bingo game, a facebook look a like, etc. Moreso too it feels discouraging because I feel like there's only so many kinds of those you can make, with the simple model you can pretty much make as many variants for an offer as you can make banners and change ad copy. But do they work at all? I don't see them on adplexity so I'd assume not.

If the interactive (i'm going to use that instead of gimicky because I think that's more the issue with how long they'd take to make many per test campaign) ones are the ones working isn't there a worry there's nowhere to go from here? They are already super saturated up.

So even if they do better I'm basically hoping someone comes and tells me a normal page that just pops for the user, has a catching banner and message still works. And if not I guess I've got my work cut out for me and I should learn to love the other ones ha. Thanks guys.

Hi corpsquid,

In my short experience in the same vertical as you, I would suggest to stick to what everyone is doing and innovate based on that: change colors, headlines, testimonials, CTA, scripts. You can also import landers from other geos and use them on yours.

I tried creating landers from scratch, and although I got a very high CTR since it was a new page, the conversions where literally 0.

I think if you're a newbie like me, it's better to copy then innovate. If you try to innovate from scratch, it takes a lot of time and we still don't have enough knowledge to make it work in most of the cases.

Just my humble opinion

Cheers!

Depends on the vertical you're in. Trust what you're seeing with spy tools, but experiment too. If you think that a simple lander should work for your vertical, try it and see - you might hit a goldmine (at least until everyone else copies your lander ).

But do remember: simple is hard. If you're going for a straight copy-plus-image lander in a saturated vertical, your copy has to be awesome, and your image incredible.

You've said everything I was going to say. Very well put!

Thank you.

OK maybe just one more thing:

Another benefit to testing variations of proven/ripped landers instead of running a completely original one you've made yourself: If you don't know how to keep it from spy tools like Adplexity, it will show up in the results and really stick out as something that looks different from the rest, and will get ripped in 2 seconds. Whereas if you test lots of the popular landers on Adplexity, find the one that works best, and test variations of it - you'd be able to improve ROI further while having your "new" landers fly under the radar - they'll just blend in amongst the existing landers on Adplexity.

Having said that: Almost every time I took the time to create an original lander, I was able to get better results. But if you don't have a way of keeping it out of spy tools, then you'll lose that edge quickly as everybody starts ripping your creation.
