Some quick advice for any newbies—oldies, you might learn something too ;-).
So you’ve bought your ticket, made flight and hotel arrangements, and figured out how to get the trade show venue by bus, taxi, or if you’re brave enough, metro systems (they can be terrifying in a new city for some!)
But your work doesn’t stop there. Trade shows are a three-part event: the before, during, and the after.
What to do before:
Conferences are undoubtedly one of the best ways to generate leads, learn through talks and workshops, network and yes, enjoy free booze and coffee. So generate those leads! Don’t come empty handed. Make sure you have a detailed list of the networks or people you want to meet along with questions. If you already maintain a working relationship with a network or advertiser, bring along a list of points to discuss, feedback about the partnership or even a gift or a token of appreciation for top service. If you want to meet with us (and you should, we're awesome), please feel free to book a meeting here
Make your party/event list. We all know that while we love booth decorations, freebies, and coffee, the real business happens in the “shadows of the night”—and no adult affiliates, this isn’t what you think it is ;-). People are more likely to remember you if you’ve been able to chat in a more relaxed environment over food and cock-or-mocktails.
During:
Keep a schedule on the day of. You made that list, right? Stick to it! Of course, we don’t think that you should peace out in the middle of a conversation if you have another meeting or appointment to get to, but be aware of the time and try to manage it well.
Hydrate! Stay healthy folks – grab those free branded bottles of water and drink up.
Also, take notes on the companies that you perhaps missed during your thorough pre-show research. If you can fit it in, try and chat with them as well, or at the very least, grab some business cards.
After:
This goes almost without saying – the follow-up! The follow-up, the follow-up, the follow-up. What’s the point of all the work (and let’s be honest, the financial investment) if you don’t send out those thank you’s, nice to meet you’s, here’s my wonderful website(s), and the like? Follow-ups are what really distinguish you from others, and will help to foster the key relationships that will help your affiliate journey move forward.
What other advice would you guys give? We're excited to see everyone very soon, we'll be at booth D2!
