Location targeting and keywords (Adwords) (3)

Location targeting and keywords (Adwords)

I’ve seen a lot of recommendations to 'target states/cities/towns’ in Adwords pay per call campaigns.

Does this mean:

a) Uploading a list of cities, towns and/or zip codes in the campaign's “locations” field or;
b) Adding the names of cities/towns/zips to the ends of keywords using an extender?

I’ve tried b) before, putting every US state and major city as a suffix to a long keyword list. This took ages, didn’t seem efficient and I wound up with 10s of thousands of ‘low search volume’ keywords that had to be deleted.

A recent video I watched suggested searching US zip codes for parts of major cities with a higher than average income bracket, running scrapebox and contact extractor to get URLs of local businesses in those zips, then putting 1 URL in Spyfu before opening up a spreadsheet… but if every city was covered in this way, it could take over a week to get a list.

Most online video tutorials focus on ideas but there’s no comment on the optimal number of keywords/minimum number of ad groups recommended, or the rough amount of time it should take to do keyword research.

Has anyone else struggled in this area? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this!

OK... so no responses, but in the meanwhile I found this:

Some examples of poor geo-targeting include:

Choosing a bunch of regions then assuming you can target each region individually at the ad group level.
Targeting a broad area (like the whole U.S.) then including specific regions in the keyword.
Targeting a broad area for a local business.

Point 2 is what I did, following the examples shown in many pay-per-call videos on Youtube etc., and I can confidently say it was not a good strategy for me.

I've followed about every online pay per call course out there. Like you said, they all focus on the cities/towns/zip codes but fail to mention anything about number of keywords etc. The SKAG's and endless list of keyword+zip/city have not worked for me. Did you have any successful pay per call campaigns since your last post?
