This is no joke. This is not an episode of Mr. Robot. This is for real.
Update your Windows systems now. Right now.

Are you one of those people who ignores prompts to update your Windows system? Well, Friday's massive international cyberattack may give you the best reason of all to hit “update” when prompted.
Microsoft on Friday said in a statement that it has "added detection and protection" to shield Windows users against WannaCrypt — the malicious software used to attack Britain's National Health Service, FedEx and other organizations. The company also said that users who downloaded a March security update should be shielded with "additional protection against this potential attack."
That lends credence to reports that suggest that the vulnerability exploited by the worm responsible for the attack is the same one revealed in April by the hacker group known as the Shadow Brokers. The Shadow Brokers alleged that the National Security Agency had used weaknesses in Windows as part of its digital surveillance efforts.
The massive online attack on Friday that seized control of computers at hospitals, shipping firms and telecom companies around the world was totally preventable.
With a few routine software updates, the security flaw linked to the attack, known as Wanna Decryptor or WannaCry, could have been addressed by information technology administrators before it had a chance to do any damage. Instead, the Windows vulnerability — which experts say is linked to the National Security Agency — has taken over thousands of personal computers, forcing their owners to pay real money or risk having their data deleted.
Happy we run on Linux and OSX!
For those non-tech guys who don't use Linux or OS X and are experiencing any issue with this ransomware:
1. Power down your infected system
2. Open the hard drive on another machine
3. Check your files
- If files not encrypted - back them up
- if files are encrypted - quick format / clean your hard drive
4. Pick the first file recovery tool that at least keeps file/folder structures and start deep recovery.
The process is loooong but yet cheaper than paying for shit or loosing your data.
This method gives great results if no further interventions have been made from infection. Don't scratch it too much
I spent part of this weekend backing up everything on my and my family's 6 computers, half OSX, half Windows.
ABC : Always Backup Computer!
An important note on this:
DROPBOX IS NOT A PROPER BACKUP SOLUTION.
It's better than nothing, but a) it throws away old files after a month (or a year with Packrat, but that's still not great), and b) it's a right bloody nuisance to recover ALL files from Dropbox before Date x. Realistically if you're not a programmer you'll end up hiring one for that task.
Crashplan is probably my #1 recommendation for non-techie backups. It can be slow but it works fairly well. Backblaze may work better for some people.
