VPS server, south america, recommendations please!!

Hey Guys,

Me again, can you recommend any hosting companies to use for a VPS server out in South America?

That would be most helpful!!!

Ta!

What do you need the VPS for specifically?

I ask because a lot of the time, you'll be better using an alternate solution. It's been a couple of years since I looked into the VPS providers in South America, but when I did I didn't find any particularly outstanding options.

If you need a server for tracking, I'd recommend looking into Miami or Dallas datacenters - they're peered well to most of South America. And if you want to serve static content, a CDN will serve considerably faster than a local VPS in those geos most of the time.

I also don't think you need a VPS in south america, anything in USA that's close to the southern border should do well. I was obsessed with loading speeds too, but after a few tests, I came to the conclusion that a generally fast VPS will serve the whole world pretty well. For static content I'm using a CDN too, which works very well based on my experience.

Thanks for the info! Its just for hosting LPs out there and I read on here its best to use hosting locally if you want to the fastest speeds, I know there not much in it but makes sense too still.

Will look into CDNs, was thinking of maybe trying gif landers but might be a bit to heavy still in the dev phase working things out. Maybe try both on a VPS and if static works best move over to CDN.

Yeah, just for the piece of mind, get a VPS in south USA and run a few tests to compare it with a CDN, I'm pretty sure the CVR differences won't be that huge.

Quick question to piggy back on that: for Pops should I use a VPS or a CDN?

Im using Beyondhosting.net that has server in Ohio, Cincinnati or Amsterdam. I don't have any problem with loading speed around America continent, but when I try to do Europe, Asia and Austraila. it took more than 5secs ++
Like caurmen and matuloo said, using CDN is your best bet if it is static file and they are alot cheaper than VPS ( Depends on how much bandwidth $0.02/1GB )

5+ secs? That definitely shouldn't be the case. I host some stuff with beyond too and whatever speed tests I've run, the speed was never more than 1.2-1.5 seconds for a more data heavy LP.

I even ran tests with a beyondhosting VPS located in US, targeting India, and the results were pretty much the same as a CDN.

What tool did you use to measure the speeds?

POPs, especially mobile POPs are the most speed sensitive types of traffic, so if possible, use CDN in this case.

Yup, I'd agree: CDN unless you can get a very, very well-connected VPS close to your target geo.

In tests I've done, a well-connected VPS will usually outperform a CDN if it's local to the target destination, but the VPS needs to be good and situated extremely well with respect to the country's Internet infrastructure. However, that's a 5% optimisation: as Matuloo says, most of the time a good CDN will work well enough.

In places like South America or most of East Asia, I'd usually go for a CDN over a VPS even if I'm at the micro-optimisation stage. In those geos, identifying not only local VPS providers, but really well-connected local VPS providers can be a real pain.

Peering is pretty bad in South America, looking at the major carriers they all seem to be based out of Sao Paulo. Miami and Washington are good secondary locations.

Example carrier: https://www.hostdime.com/images/netw...tm_medium=post

VPS.net has Sao Paulo, so I would go with them

Thanks for adding that, any CDN's you recommend?

You can't go too wrong with Amazon's Cloudfront, and we have tutorials on setting it up here on STM, so that's a bonus.

If you want to choose absolutely the fastest CDN, look at Cedexis: https://www.cedexis.com/get-the-data/country-report/

I was using GTmetrix, and https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/
and I asked some friends that live in South east asia to try the link that I send them, and most of them said like around 5-8 secs.
My server is @ US, and I guess I'm using the cheapest plan from BeyondHosting ( $65/month ), maybe thats one of the reason as well ? that I need a better server ?
