Performance Marketing vs Online Poker - Questions and Answers
For the introduction to the topic of AM vs Online Poker, please refer to this thread
Part 2: Variance and Standard Deviation
Part 3: Bankroll Management
Part 4: Masterminds and Study Groups
ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS
A few years ago, before I quit poker, I used to blog on a poker forum. In one of my lasts posts there, I explained why I think one should play poker, and I quote from that post now:
“ [...] poker is a fun game. Competition and money both add up for great fun for me personally. Some also like the pure thrill of uncertainty, of the luck factor. You can challenge the best in the world and you can still win without cheating. Try doing that against Usain Bolt in a 100m sprint!
Last but most definitely not least, poker develops skills necessary in non-poker environments as well. If for JB poker is the king of games,
I consider it the ultimate teacher. Poker gave me a very different perspective on life and on what truly matters... “
In the short series about AM vs Online Poker, I tried to touch on the specific skills and habits that transfer very well from poker players to affiliate marketers. That said, I stay behind the quote that poker is the ultimate teacher. I’ve opened this thread to answer questions about what I think the lessons from poker were that helped in AM, startups, technology and whatever else you can think of.
Let’s get the ball rolling!

Here's one I've been wanting to ask you since the series began:
What's the biggest "false friend" between poker and AM?
By "false friend" here I'm meaning it in the language-learning sense: something that seems similar or identical, but is actually very different, and can really throw you off in learning.
So another way to ask would be "if you're a poker player looking to learn AM, what's the biggest error you could make by assuming AM's just like poker?"

First of all thanks for the amazing series of posts on this topic!
I don't play poker myself, but wanted to ask: What are some of the "downsides" of playing poker that have driven people like yourself to AM? Less risk? More scalability?

Biggest error would certainly be to think AM is just about click buttons in front of your screen. That's just the beginning, and then the thing that scales things is some more old fashion business development. Working in a group brings many more benefits. Study groups/masterminds help in poker too, but when push comes to shove, it's you vs your opponents. In AM, you don't ever have to be alone vs the competition. Teams FTW!

Poker is simply exchanging time for money. In many cases very good money, but once you don't click buttons in front of your screen, or play live, there's no more money being made. There are not many things you can leverage on in poker to scale. In terms of risk, I'd say AM is riskier than poker in many aspects.
Plus, poker can become just as boring as a regular job.. So part of the reason people quit poker is the same as why people change workplaces, or want a promotion.
