Is Interspire email marketer still the way to go for more advanced self hosted emailmarketing tools? Any alternatives? It seems like Interspire is not actively developed anymore.

yes its good if you have good email server . am also using it for past 6 years with my own setup. its working very good.

Try MailWizz ( http://www.mailwizz.com/ ) which at $54.99 for a licensed copy is cheap and much more flexible than Interpsire IMHO. It also allows you to feed Amazon SES, PowerMTA's /Pickup directory and a lot of other features. There is a good forum of users, some third party vendors and coders plus it is written in unlocked php/mysql you can hack yourself if you choose.
