Mobile Vibration Case Study: Get Up To 40% Extra ROI Using The Right Vibration!

I made a special case study just for STM where I split tested several types of mobile vibrations, so I can see if it makes any difference.

MAIN HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS CASE STUDY

Make yourself cup of your favorite coffee/tea/grab a cool beer and find a comfy seating position, it's a time for a vibration case study!

INTRO

From time to time I like to do some fun split tests such as the one I did for today's case study.

What can be fun on a split test?

Read on.

But, let me first ask you:

Do you use vibrations on your landing pages?

I bet most of you do.

I also bet that most of the time you just copied and pasted them from another landing page and forgot about them..

..or even worst, they are already in the ripped LP and you even don't know about them.

Ouch.

Don't worry though, I know how most of us affiliates work!

HERE COMES THE FUN PART

Vibrations inspired by songs and movies!

Do you remember ringtones?

Yeah, pretty old stuff from the 90's.

Everyone wanted to have the coolest polyphonic ringtone on their Nokia.

Yeah, we all remember this one. ^^^

Do you know you can actually make "vibration ringtones"?

You can create custom vibration patterns that will resemble any song or theme from a movie.

You can setup your own sequences of vibrations and delays between.

What about having your landing page vibrating the Star Wars Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)?

..or Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal?

..or maybe James Bond 007 theme?

Here is how these looks translated into javascript:

Star Wars:
Code:
navigator.vibrate([500,110,500,110,450,110,200,110,170,40,450,110,200,110,170,40,500]);
Michael Jackson:
Code:
navigator.vibrate([0,300,100,50,100,50,100,50,100,50,100,50,100,50,150,150,150,450,100,50,100,50,150,150,150,450,100,50,100,50,150,150,150,450,150,150]);
James Bond:
Code:
navigator.vibrate([200,100,200,275,425,100,200,100,200,275,425,100,75,25,75,125,75,25,75,125,100,100]);
Simple and powerful, right?

You can find a nice list of music/movies vibration themes on this site.

Even this list is from 2013, what do you think how many affiliates did use them?

I know about 1.

COMPUTER GENERATED VIBRATIONS

On the other hand I was curious how would a randomly computer generated vibration perform.

That would be 100% unique pattern that nobody used yet.

So I created a simple tool that enables you to generate 3 types of vibrations:

You can set the number of vibrating sequences, min/max vibrating and pause pause time, then choose one of the above mentioned sorting ^^^.

Here is how it looks like:

NOTE: I'm giving away access to this tool for FREE, more info is on the end of this case study.

..so did you ever try to split test vibrations?

Vibration is the only way that users can actually "feel your landing page".

As weird it may sound it's true.

You can make their phone shake in their hands!

Will it really make any difference?

Let's find out!

MY SETUP

Traffic source: PopAds

I've chosen PopAds as I know the offer converts well there and I am able to buy cheap traffic with low CPM (below $1).

Offer: App Install (CPI)

I've chosen app install as the payout is low (below $0.4) and I can get data much faster for the purposes of this test.

Landing page: 9 landing pages with different types of vibrations and no vibration at all

I've chosen 4 musical vibration landing pages, 3 with generated vibrations and 1 without vibration

I've chosen the following musical vibrations:

I've decided on these purely on my personal preference of liking them while testing on the phone.

I then introduced 3 more computer generated vibrations as I finished my tool, that's why they have less visits.

Finally, to be complete and see if vibrations make any sense at all I introduced a landing page with no vibrations.

It got the less data, but maintains my requirement of minimum $50 spend per landing page.

Budget: at least $50 per landing page

Which in this case translates to over 150x of the offer's payout.

RESULTS

Let's see finally the results!

Landing pages highlighted with green are musical/movie themed, with blue are computer generated and yellow is the default one.

As you can see the musical vibrations are doing mostly good, Star Wars is the clear winner with 107.58% ROI, where the worst one is Karnivool with only 66.30% ROI.

That's a 41.28% difference!

From the computer generated the Ascending is doing the best, but overall they are very close to each other.

Interesting is the one with no vibration, it's actually doing quite good, but I had about 20k less data on that one.

So what we can say after seeing all of this?

The difference between best and worst landing page (vibration based) is $26.57 or 41.28%.

On small volume it might not be very interesting, but once we run more traffic to it the difference starts showing up.

So what do you think? Are going to split test vibrations as well?

BONUS: FREE MOBILE VIBRATION GENERATOR TOOL

As I promised here is the Mobile Vibration Generator tool that I created for the purpose of this case study.

Hope it help you to generate some profitable vibrations.

Vibration ringtones? This is SO cool!

Haha this is dope! My kind of case study.

I wonder what results you would get if you used different alert sounds. E.g iPhone default sounds, mac, android, door bell etc.

Awesome case study test. I enjoy doing different split test experiments myself and seeing the results but this is one I hadn't thought of for sure!

I'm now going to test musical vibrations on all my relevant campaigns.. focusing on the most popular songs in that GEO haha

This is really cool! Never thought about this...thanks for the share

Great stuff Erik! Thanks for taking time to write it

Dope casestudy!

Allthough I wonder what the results would be when drilling down on placement/device or even time of the day.
It might be possible that the results are similar for all landers then, because the LP CTR's are also very similar.

What fun! Thanks so much for the case study and for so generously sharing the vibration generator tool!

Thank you sooo much! Epic! This is going on my next lander

holy crap! thanks for this case study and the links. I knew there was a way to do it, but I had no idea how. Lately I've been using just standard vibrate script. This is like gold!

Awesome improvements, 41%!!

Copying your phones brand notification will likely perform the best:
Detect iOS > play iOS system alert
Detect Android > play Android alert

Reminds me of the case study "Submit your email for a CAT". Meow~

It's possible to drilldown, but it's a hell of analysing it across 9 landers. There are definitely some interesting discoveries once you start drilling down.
I'm not sure if I understand your hypothesis about the same results. Can you try to explain again?

Now the gap is even higher.
I checked the stats and there are additional conversions worth of $40+, I might repost some results after 1 week, as ppl are still installing/opening the app.
The gap between the worst and best lander is now around 46%.

Phone brands, hmm I smell some creative mind there

Cannot wait what you guys come up with.

No problem, I might keep it for myself, but I thought its more fun to give it to everyone hands.
And sometimes I just feel its time to give back something to this awesome community!

Great that you also compared the results with a LP without vibration. Thanks a lot for sharing the results!

It seems that the vibration isn't working on iPhones (I've tested it on 4 and on 6s)?
