Optimizing targeting

Hello,

I have read quite a bit about optimizing placements, OS, models, landers, offers etc. I haven't found much information based on cutting category targeting.

What's the best method for cutting categories? I tried the AB split test graphical Bayesian calculator, but the numbers vary so much I didn't know if that's the best idea.

This is PopAds .

Please see my stats.

Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

Thanks a million.

Make it a successful day!

When I'm optimizing some source that has some kind of category targeting, I first need to determine whether I have to cut the whole category or it has potential. To do this, simply drill down and check the stats by category - are there green placements or is it all red, how about OS, browsers ... etc? In case you see green stuff there, you can even make separate campaigns for these categories and target just those targets.

In reality, I usually just stick to optimizing the placements themselves, because the categories are just groups of placements anyways

Hey!

How's it going?

I guess you already had a pretty good answer from my friend Matuloo. Even so, I’ll try to give you my perspective.

I don't usually mess with categories in RON campaigns. Why? Because - as Matuloo stated - categories are groups of placements. This means that, if you cut an entire category, you can be cutting something bad but also something pretty awesome.

Let me tell you when it's okay to mess with categories. At times, you can mess with categories in whitelists, depending on the amount and the profile of the placements.

Another chance? You can also do this in campaigns just for one placement. This is only for those cases where you can safely know that you’re cutting just a bad category and not any good placement along with it.

I guess this is a safe and rational way to proceed!

Cheers!

I tend to find that categories aren't particularly useful on most traffic sources. They're often not even very accurate - you'll find a lot of random stuff that doesn't belong. If I recall correctly, at one point I found a big lifestyle (health/beauty/fitness) site eating most of the impressions in a "gaming" category.

Generally, just skipping categories and going for individual placements is more reliable.

This is true, most publishers just pick any random category when submitting their websites as they don't really care. Normally "Arts and Entertainment" will cover all their blogs!

Stick to placement targeting as suggested, you'll find it works well
