Hi guys,
I'm using Facebook ads for a startup that my development team has been running for about 6 months. We are able to deliver bulk articles for SEOers with instant turn around time on a ton of different topics.
Currently, the site makes the bulk of it's income from big clients and our sales thread on Blackhatworld. We however are ready to dedicate the time and resources to exploring Facebook ads because we think it's another profitable avenue that we can pursue.
After the first day of testing we have earned $55 on $20 spend. Which is obviously a fantastic first sign!
We are targeting people who like Blackhatworld, MOZ SEO, Ahrefs and Majestic, ages 18-65+, m/f and in 10 countries. Target audience is 340,000
Please critique our methodology.
1. Selecting target audiences via interests in other SEO related pages (i.e Blackhat world, MOZ, Ahrefs)
2. Targeting countries that we've had made sales in the past (about 10)
3. Created 10 different images in separate ad sets to with one instance of sales copy.
4. Once we determine which image is the winner we will start split testing different sales copy.
Here are the stats from the first day.

Questions:
1. Target audience is 340,000 people. Is this adequate?
2. Is there a better way, or at least an alternative way, to find a good target audience? Our current methodology is to just add interests in blackhat world (where we are doing well), Moz and Ahrefs.
3. Does each target group, i.e people who like Blackhat World need to be placed in a separate campaign or will Facebook correctly identify which audience the conversion came from?
4. Is there anything we are obviously doing wrong?
Couple ideas I would try:
Funnel:
1. Instead of promoting the product directly yourself try creating a page like "SEO Agency Advice" where you can refer to the product from a different perspective (like Tech Crunch recommending a new startup type thing).
2. Then make an article like "This ONE outsourcing trick scaled my SEO business from 3 clients to 50".
-Use the article to harp on the pain points: output bottlenecks, time intensive articles, hate writing.
-In the ad copy I would sprinkle in real fears the SEO person has about oursourcing "I was scared to outsource, because what if someone fucks it up? I bit the bullet and tested 3 and 2 were immediate shit, but this [insert your company name] they delievered, better than i expected!"
Ads:
Saw some of your creatives, not sure what hot girls have to do with SEO? lol. Perhaps try imagery more targeted. Like a stack of microsoft doc icons. Or some dude pulling out his hair trying to write an article. Or a guy working away on his laptop (exhausted) with a clock beside him. Ad could read "Are you wasting away hours writing SEO articles for your clients?" or something along those lines.
To answer your other questions.
1. Target audience is 340,000 people. Is this adequate?
Audience of that size should be good to start. It's not really about the audience size. If you are selling 1 million dollar consulting packages and your audience size is 4,000 even if you convert one lead your printing money. Just an example to put audience size in perspective.
2. Is there a better way, or at least an alternative way, to find a good target audience? Our current methodology is to just add interests in blackhat world (where we are doing well), Moz and Ahrefs.
Go to Moz, Ahrefs Facebook pages and look for the most active and engaging users. Creep their profiles and see what other pages they like on Facebook. Also pixel your sales page so you can create look a like audiences for future campaigns.
3. Does each target group, i.e people who like Blackhat World need to be placed in a separate campaign or will Facebook correctly identify which audience the conversion came from?
Separate each interest your targeting into its own ad set so you can identify where your conversions are coming from. Doesn't have to be campaign level, but on adset level -yes.
4. Is there anything we are obviously doing wrong?
Seems like your click baiting the ads and neglecting a proper pre-sell. The win-win in FB marketing is when you make a RELEVANT click-baity ad that still provides value for the user and a congruent user experience.
