VPS vs VM
Hi all,
I've been told that both are good and bad in their own ways. What are thoughts on VM vs VPS for storing accounts?
Thanks!

Hmm.. Isn't VM the same thing as VPS?
VM = virtual machine
VPS = Virtual Private Server
In the hosting world VM is used the same way as VPS

They're sort of the same thing. A VPS is a solely hosting term, wheras lots of people run VMs on their local machines, and the term "VPS" usually wouldn't be used there.
If you have a VPS it's automatically a VM too, but if you have a VM it's not necessarily a VPS, or at least you wouldn't refer to it as such.
On the original question - if you're running a VM on your local machine you'll still have the same external network signals as your original machine (IP, mainly) so FB can pick up on that. On the other hand, if you're connecting to FB through a hosted server, they can run a reverse DNS and see that the IP you're coming from is at a hosting company not an ISP.

Hosting company owner here: They are precisely the same thing from a technical standpoint. The only perceived difference is that most companies who market VPS services handle the base configuration of the OS for you while most companies marketing a VM will give you a base install, letting you install whatever services and packages you need.
Personally, I would always prefer to setup my systems the way I want from scratch, so to speak, but I realize that not everyone is the desire or ability to do that.
