Best "desktop" traffic source for a fresh newbie? (6)

Best "desktop" traffic source for a fresh newbie?

I've posted in the main Q&A forum with a broader topic, but this is something I have a main interest in. I work at a desktop with lots of downtime that could potentially be used to craft campaigns etc, as well as lots of time in the morning and at night.

I'm a fresh newbie. I understand copywriting, and the concept of AM - but have never ran campaigns. I joined this forum for a couple of months years ago and left - I think I was not in the mindset to get started then.

Sorry for rambling - HERES MY QUESTION:

1) I came here to learn Facebook, is that feasible for a fresh newbie on a $1-2K budget over a couple of months - with "legal", whitehat ads?
2) If not, what other desktop sources are good for a newbie to learn to generate leads/sell products and obviously make money?

My short term goal is $50-$100 stable days while building huge knowledge in the process.

Thank you!

Lastly - if any STM AMers with experience are in NYC would love to buy you coffee/lunch/dinner/drinks to pick your brain and network!

I'll give your questions a shot.

1)I don't run on FB, but have heard that it can take quite a bit of money to learn the ropes, due to all the different targeting options available.

Another issue with facebook is that no matter how whitehat you run, unless you're the offer owner, there will always be a risk of getting an account ban - all it takes are complaints from a couple of unhappy visitors/customers for FB to ply their ban hammer.

So, learning how to keep your account will be a key skill to learn before you even start. If that's the way you want to go, I've heard that B2B lead gen can be a good choice. As usual, target the right demographic and use the right angle (duh!) And I know there are people running Shopify and killing it on facebook.

2)Pop traffic would be another option. With everyone doing mobile nowadays, desktop traffic prices have come down somewhat. With pop though you can't push any offers/products that are even remotely niche. Broad-appeal offers only - such as antivirus, sweepstakes, adult dating, gaming.

Or, you could try PPC - adwords and bing would be good places to start. Unlike with pop, when you're running PPC, niche would be the way to go. The more targeted (specific and relevant) your keywords are to the product/offer, the higher the conversion rate you'll get - but then traffic prices can also be higher.

STM has sub-forums that discuss each of the traffic types above in great detail, so if you want to find out more, dive into the relevant subsection and start reading.

Hopefully I've provided some food for thought! Best of luck with whatever you may choose to do.

Thanks Vortex, much appreciate the thoughtful reply!

Couple of follow on questions:

1) Where could you find B2B lead gen offers for Facebook?
2) Are you saying that these B2B lead gen offers would hold less risk of the banhammer?
3) When you say people are killing it on Shopify - are they creating affiliate sale websites (ie. linking to other peoples products) and driving FB traffic to their own site? Or are they owning the products in a warehouse fulfillment center and doing it that way? Is there a subforum for this?
4) What desktop pop source would you recommend and will is the reason people are going mobile is because desktop performs poorly?

Thanks so much again! Apologies for the rapid follow on questions.... maybe I should open my mind to mobile..

1)Off the top of my head: Try shareasale, linkshare, commission junction, maxbounty.

2)Yes that's exactly what I was saying. B2B lead gen in general are a lot safer (read: less shady) than the typical CPA offers we run - antivirus, sweeps etc.

3)Instead of trying to answer this myself - let me show you the best thread on this topic:

4)I don't think the reason why everyone's flocking to mobile, is because desktop is doing poorly. It's just because mobile is expanding at a rapid rate compared to desktop traffic volumes. This is especially true for tier 3 geos where very few people own a computer but many people own cell phones.

You'll find that most major pop sources have both desktop and mobile traffic. As an STM mod I can't endorse any traffic network, but I know gunggo has a lot of desktop inventory. Their minimum initial deposit is $5k, but I MIGHT be able to help you get in for less - no guarantees but if you want to check them out please send me a PM.

Thanks for the questions! Enjoying the discussion.

Congrats on coming back on STM and trying again! The most important thing when it comes to affiliate marketing (besides killer landing pages & banners is to never give up. Anyway on to your questions...Facebook can be a great source of income IF you know what you're doing and have disposable income. Personally I always recommend that any marketer go after FB after they've become a bit more seasoned in the affiliate game - or if you have a large following on your page that you can monetize (approx over 10K+ followers if possible) In my experience complete newbies who go after FB right away tend to also give up on making money marketing online - often they feel overwhelmed or they lose their money too quickly - jut make sure you read through these forums carefully and don't go too crazy at first

As to your 2nd question Adnium.com is a great CPM traffic network for new affiliates We're very newbie friendly because our user interface is pretty (lol) and simple to use plus you get lots of advice from our affiliate managers who can help you optimize your ad campaigns. We specialize in pop and banners. Pops/popunders are also better as you don't need to get banners We've also got exclusive, Members' Area traffic -something not a lot of networks can boast about! Skype any of the account managers directly in my sig OR skype me here: ivana.gsmi if you're interested in knowing more.

Good luck and I wish you success in whatever you do!

It's possible, it depends how creative you are and how fast you learn the type of ads that work on fb. I'd suggest starting in a lower cost geo.
