How to block viral buzz feed etc sites on GDN?

How do you block viral, buzz feed etc sites on GDN?
I tried putting negative keywords but GDN is still showing my ads on these placements. For example i have viral as negative campaign keyword but theviraldance.com still getting impressions and clicks.

If any of you guys running these sites sorry but your "traffic" does not convert for me!

Hi i believe you can do that with a custom adwords script. Check freeadwordsscripts.com and if you cannot find a close one you may need a programmer. Manually you can just go to the display network tab and hit placements. Then if you use a filter with the keyword "viral" you will see all domains that contain the keyword "viral" and exclude them. A script can do that automatically every hour

You'll probably also want to block sites that contain the word "quiz" in them as well...I've run into the same issue you have, sites that contain the words viral, buzz, and quiz are a waste of money. I did set up a rule in each campaign that shuts off sites based on "targetable text" but I'm not quite sure if that blocks domains or not. If you come up with a solution to this, post it for sure...I'm also going to talk to my rep about this.

By the way, if you're running clean and run into a technical issue like this, you can call Google at 866 2Google...they are very friendly (unlike, say Google, circa 2008) and want to help you spend more money.

I tried searching for viral in Placements but did not get that many sites maybe 20-30 and im sure there are way more than that out there.
Also, looked for custom script on freeadwordsscripts.com but nothing that would work.

I actually found Google chat support to be pretty helpful. I think they are less rushed to complete the call than phone support people. I do not have a rep yet. How much spend is usually required to get one? Did your rep give any good advice?

"I did set up a rule in each campaign that shuts off sites based on "targetable text" but I'm not quite sure if that blocks domains or not." - How did you do that?

Here is the reply i got from a service call/ticket that i opened

To eliminate all Flashlight apps and eliminate websites like theviraldance.com , you would need to add them as placement exclusions like you've done now for some of them.

As I explained, adding the negative keywords like viral or viral news won't guarantee that your ads won't show up on a website like theviraldance.com because as I explained, negative keywords on the Display Network work based on the site's content and not the URL - and if you visit theviraldance.com, you'll notice that the word viral is barely mentioned on the website.

It's great that you have negative keywords - kudos to you for that. But, your negative keywords will definitely work in some cases, and won't work in some cases as well.

The best way over here would be for you to monitor the campaign's performance and add these websites and apps as placement exclusions. Additionally, if you already have a list of some of these apps or websites, you can add them as exclusions.

However, I do think that this could be good feedback for the relevant teams as far as adding a feature that let's you exclude placements based on a word - in your case, viral and flashlight.

I encourage you to leave that feedback here if you'd like to bring this to the team's notice as a feature request.
