Welcome to the 3rd part of my mini-series that should help you understand the various traffic types you can work with as an affiliate marketer.
First part dealt with POP traffic : http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...inition-1-POPS
Second part was about MOBILE : http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ition-2-MOBILE

This time around, I'm gonna talk about one of the largest traffic types when it comes to volume : ADULT Traffic. To make a quick definition of this type of traffic – its basically traffic from "Not Safe For Work" sites (NSFW). You're supposed to work at your job, not to stare at titties – hence the NSFW label
Obviously, there is a lot of sub categories here that we will take a look at later on, but basically : if there is more skin on the photo/video material on a site than you are comfortable to show your grandma, the site is probably adult – unless your grandma remembers Woodstock I guess
SEGMENTATION:
Before we move further, we need to define the basic segmentation of adult traffic based on the level of "acceptability" – 1. Sexy, 2.Softcore, 3.Hardcore, 4.Borderline
1. Sexy – this is basically swimsuit/bikini stuff
2. Softcore - #1 + a bit more skin, bare tits are ok, frontal display of genitals is not.
3. Hardcore – Everything is ok here as long as its legal.
4. Borderline – What is legal in one country might not be legal in another one. Believe it or not, even disgusting shit like bestiality is allowed by law in some GEOs. I would recommend staying away from this segment.
Why did I define these segments? Majority of the offers either take ADULT traffic or they don't, but a significant part will have further requirements in line with this segmentation. You could run into these limits especially when running "non-adult" offers on adult traffic. It is always a good idea to ask your AM before pushing adult traffic, majority will not want #4 at all so as I said, stay away from it.
This segmentation is also very common when it comes to allowed creatives. Especially with mobile traffic, specifically with PIN submit offers. These are subject to pretty heavy regulations so a lot of offers won't take anything "harder" than #1. Its pretty weird in a way – they don't mind that the banner is next to a hardcore video, but the banner itself cannot show a bare tit ... go figure
Such are the rules tho, so no point in whining here
TRANSPARENCY:
There is one thing I really like about Adult traffic and that is the transparency. Most networks will show you domains of the placements, you can go directly to those sites and check what kinda ads are running there... many of the sites are actually so massive in traffic, that you can tweak your campaigns on a per-site basis.

The bad part: all the big affiliates are aware of this, so the level of spying in adult is unparalleled to anything else, your campaigns will get ripped in a matter of a few hours
This also drives up the level of competition, that's insane in adult right now.
MORE SEGMENTATION:
There are two very basic types of adult traffic that you can buy. First one is surfers who are looking for free adult stuff, we call them the freeloaders. These guys are hard to convert and you need 1000s of eyeballs to find a buyer
The second one is people who already spent money for some adult-related membership and you can target them in the members areas of various sites - especially dating sites.
Obviously, the freeloaders are waaaay cheaper than members, but also the CVR rates will be totally different. Of course, the freeloaders outnumber the paying members like 10.000 to 1, so the volume is there if you can make it work.
There is no shortage of free content sites that you can buy traffic from, but since google decided to prefer social factors like "time on site", pretty much all SE traffic has been moved to so called TUBE sites – adult clones of youtube so to speak. All other types of adult sites are dying a slow death, because without google love, the traffic is not flowing as it should be, the conversions are low and so are the profits. Mediabuyers love to go where the volume is, so its all about the tubes now. This does not mean there are no other sites still in operation other than the tubes. If you can focus on finding these lower-trafficked sites, you might very well find a few gems in the mix and turn big ROI on them.
Even tubes themselves can be segmented further - some work better than others and there is a reason for that. These sites can be based almost entirely on organic traffic, or be engaged in heavy traffic trading in one form or another. The best quality traffic is on "organic traffic" tubes, those tubes that trade or buy traffic heavily, will usually convert worse. Some tubes evolved into community sites where swingers post their stuff for example, so if you can come up with a product that would relate to their lifestyle, the conversions will be higher. Studying the large tubes and optimizing your funnels to suit them, can give you an edge that is so needed in today’s over-competitive world of adult traffic.
DELIVERY OPTIONS:
You can choose from a variety of delivery methods for adult traffic :
- POPs : I wrote a specific post about pop traffic so I'm not gonna waste your time here. All the rules apply, just the source sites differ.
- REDIRECTS : A user gets redirected from a site even before the site was loaded. These are almost 100% mobile surfers. Usually lower quality and arbitrage sites sell these as they risk a google ban.
- BANNERS : Traffic resulting from banner clicks. Here we need to dive in a little bit deeper, based on where the banners is placed :

1. For desktop traffic it's usually :
NTV (Next to video): typical tube position - this is the most trafficked spot in desktop adult, sized 300x250, 315x300 or something similar.
Home page cube, which is usually 300x250 spot on the homepage of a site.
Header, middle and footer: self explanatory. Could be several formats - 300x250, 468x60, 728x90 ... tons of traffic here too.
Side Column or Tower: banners on the left or right side of a page. Usually 160x600 up to 200x1000+
In-video or In-player: banner that appears inside of the video player at the beginning or when you pause the playback – typical tube position too.
IM-Instant Message: small window that imitates some instant message client or system message, it will usually appear in the right bottom and move down as you scroll.
Interstitial and Message Bar: banners usually in wide rectangle format, they slide from the side of from the bottom of a site.
2. For Mobile it's mostly:
NTV: mostly in case the site is not mobile optimized.
In-Player: quite often, this zone replaces NTV on mobile optimized sites.
Header, Middle and Footer: these are the most trafficked zones in mobile adult. Usually 300x100 for header and 300x250 for mid and footer.
Instant message: usually on sites not optimized for mobile
Message Bar and Interstitial: same as with desktop, but lower volume. Interstitial has more volume.
There is one specific thing regarding banner placements on adult sites, site owners love to plaster a ton of ads on every page. So don’t be surprised when you see NTV-A, NTV-B and in some cases even NTV-C and I have seen NTV-D too. Its nothing unusual to see 4 header or footer banners next to each other either. The more banners on a site, the lower the CTR and quality usually is, so keep that in mind when buying traffic.
Speaking about volumes, the biggest amount of impressions is in the 300x250 (315x300 etc) banner format, both in desktop and mobile. 300x100 (305x99 ...) is coming close in mobile. There are many more formats available, but these have the most volume by far in every GEO.
- TEXT ADS: Ads in similar format as you are used to see on google or yahoo... these are almost dead by now, but some volume is still there. There are also some sites that sell ads on their own and these are often text based.
MOBILE VS DESKTOP:

There is quite a difference between mobile and desktop adult traffic. Mobile has already taken the lead when it come to volume, but desktop is still there and its not to be overlooked. Generally speaking, desktop traffic is better in quality, which can mean a lot when running free lead gen offers – dating for example. On the other hand, mobile clicks are usually cheaper, because the CTR's are higher. But, the higher CTR's are often the result of "fat" fingers, so many of those clicks are unintentional. On the other hand, mobile can work very well on PIN submit offers, but ... see how it's not possible to set a clear winner here? I wrote it like this on purpose, because many people asked me what to pick in adult, mobile or desktop? As you can see, its not possible to tell
WHAT TO PROMOTE ON ADULT TRAFFIC:
There are a few obvious matches for adult traffic, but we have to realize one thing: these are real people, maybe you have just shown your ad to some of them on google just an hour ago. So distract them from their current state of mind and you might sell them pretty much anything. Always ask the advertiser about adult traffic tho, not every offer accepts it.
The best on the tubes works dating right now, followed by some pharma (penis pills, muscle stuff). Sometimes the pick-up guides and bizzop take the lead for a while, when a good offer appears. Cams are also promoted, but its usually brand advertising by the biggest players. The same goes for paid porn sites.
In case of mobile traffic, it's a lot about PIN submits, Dating, Anti-virus, App Installs (cloaked) and Sweeps.
Members area traffic can convert pretty much anything, but the most promoted offers are dating again, cams, nutra and pharma offers and pickup guides – so anything with larger payouts and usually on revshare or PPS model.

Thanks for all the information related to adult traffic.
Every adnetwork work different as different are the ways to monetize the traffic. As we always said in our agency to the webmasters: "Less is more in order to monetize better"
Great post!
You can add TrafficStars in your list! (exclusive spot on xhamster...) One source that increases more recently.

Thank you for very cool information!
Nice thread!
From where you can buy members traffic? Traffic Haus, Adnium?
matuloo "What is legal in one country might not be legal in another one." can you speculate a bit more on this? as far as I know, for instance in Iran people could be sentenced to death if they host porn websites. Do you know other cases where adult ads promotion had led to serious punishments?
Hello Matuloo
, I made this question earlier on another post, but I think that is much better to make it here.
HOW TO TRACK CHATURBATE FREE REGISTRATION AND 20% REV SHARE COMISSION ON
I will explain a bit what I´m currently doing so far.
I´m running CB offers with Juicy ads and I´m doing really good, but I've been working just with the CB stats and would like to track my campaign with
So, here are my questions. Perhaps this could be useful for many people here.
1- Setting up Juicy Ads postback on Voluum: This is the Postback that I took from Juicy ads and placed on Voluum tracker: https://ck.juicyads.com/ilikeitjuicy.php?u=105958&s2s={dynamicS2S}&amount= {Amount}&token=6507ab445689628a5576c61496087275e4d 17&data=52b1540bc33583d1d771a0aa025896625309a
2- Setting Up CB offer URL on Voluum:
https://chaturbate.com/in/?track=default&tour=YrCr&campaign=L8q58Ks&room=the roomthatIpromote&cid={clickid}
3- Finally Juicy ads ask me the campaign url from Voluum adding a Dynamic Site token in order to see on Juicy ads platform all the site information that I´m gettin traffic from.
https://mytrackingdomain.club/27aa460f-b9ce-4acf-ae52-5239143b15f2?track={dynamicSITE}
I´m Showing all these links in order to find any mistakes on them.
The results of this kind of configuration is the following:
I’m runing an auto cpm model so I can see the impressions, devices, etc etc but can’t se the cost or Site id on Voluum.
I think that I can fix cost issue by changing the Auto CPM model to CPM with a custom Value on it and that will be fixed.
I don’t know how to fix the Site Id report in Voluum.
In addition, Chaturbate doesn’t provide a Postback integration on their platform (that's what I´m understanding), so I can’t get any kind of information about FREE REGISTRATION and 20% REV SHARE comissions on Voluum tracker. How could I fix this?
I hope I have been clear enough about my doubts regarding the tracking of CB offers with Voluum and Juicy ads.
I want to be able to solve this, not only to be able to optimize my campaigns in the best possible way, but also to be able to upload screenshots of my campaigns in Voluum to share my progress with you and to be able to collaborate with the STM community.
Thanks so much.
Facundo.
thank you for the info
