Does anyone ever win that iPhone?
Is the public opinion of sweeps as low as it appears?
Why/how does it still even work with such a bad reputation (see links below)?

People don't get their $1 iphones, grandmas don't look 35 years younger in 1 minute.....hard to believe, right?
Actually, some sweeps really give prizes to the registered people. Especially in GEOs where trade authorities have more power to enforce the law. Its a draw still, so 1 in god-knows-how-many gets the price I guess - same as any lottery btw.
It's not a scam unless you use the "instant winner" angle. If you say they have a chance to win, you did you part to not scam them.
In general all of the sweepstakes are legit. Why ? Because the cost of the prizes is marginal compared to other costs.
If we break down a typical mobile sub campaing for instance - sweepstakes win iphone. Check the terms. The competition usually runs for a year - for simplicity's sake lets consider it runs for 300 days. It runs in several countires at the same time - lets say 3. A prize is given out either annualy or monthly - lets say monthly.
Lets do the math: 1 iphone costs around 600 usd. 12 are given during the campaing so total cost of prize fund is 600*12 = 7200.
It runs in 3 countries so the prize fund per country is 2400 usd. It runs for 300 days, so the cost per day is 8 usd.
It only costs the merchant 8 usd per day .. per country to have the sweepstakes legal and give out the prize as defined in terms.
8.00 USD for monthly win, if they give out only 1 iphone in 1 year (which is kinda the norm) it costs the advertiser 0.67 USD per day per country.
Most of the sweeps are actually not based on the luck model since that would put them into the gambling category legally, they are usually based on the skill game concept. The winner is the guy who gets the most points, answering questions or whatever - the guy who gets the highest score during the competition run.
So the offers are legit.
Now the way they are promoted is mostly not legit - it is misleading.
Merchants know this and while they dont publicly admit it, they accept it, since its impossible to generate profit otherwise.
So if shit hits the fan, the merchant will blame the affiliate network, affiliate, whoever.. But the merchant knew very well when he created the offer how ti will be promoted in order to generate results.
