After 3 Years doing Adwords for Overall $16000 Cost, Im still a rookie - a Question

Hi everybody,

Im new here, and to AM in general.
Just wanted to consult with some of you more experienced folks.

Background: I was a marketing manager for 2 startup companies for the past 3 years, one of them is a translation company offers professional translation services.
so i was running $300-$400 daily budgy adwords campaigns, with not alot of experience in adwords. i do learnt alot managing those campaigns, and i was optimising them on a 3 day basis on average.

well, since my experience online translation sevrices, i thought it would be a good place to invest my fresh AM efforts, first.

Few days ago, i started to run a campaign, affiliating for OneHourTranslation.com
Using the keywords, and some of the negative keywords i remembered from working in that company, i tried to restore some success - but my performance are worst.

data (25.4-28.4) (1 adwords campaigns, targeted worldwide for only for english users, Search only, mobile bids - decrease %90, maximize click (max click:$0.3))

Ads:
-
Translation Services 24/7
Fast, High Quality Translation Online
99+ Languages, 15,000 Translators.
-
Professional Translation
Fast, High Quality Translation Online
15,000 Translators, Availiable 24/7

Onehourtranslation affiliate program data:

Unique Visitors: 159
Registered Users: 8 (Visitors who opened an account)
Transactions: 1
Payout: $55.65
Comission: $1.65

Well, those performance are very low comparing to those i dealt with in the previous company i worked for.

Questions:

1)about the bad performance -before, i used to manage a campaign from a strong, 2 years adwords account. now i run it from a totally fresh personal account - does it matter?
2) what am i doing wrong? does using broad keywords like that (+professional +translation) is smart when you are just starting your global campaign?
3) any recommendation regarding translation services affiliation programs?

Im a newbie in AM - sorry if the post is a bit infantile.

Thanks for any help guys!

Hello,

welcome to the forum, Im sure you will find a lot of useful info in here

Now to the campaign you started. Im sorry but it will not work just like this.

OHT only gives you a tiny % of the value of the order, you have no chance to compete with brand advertisers this way. Affiliate programs of sites like OHT are usually meant for site owners who simply put one more banner somewhere on their site and dont care much about the income per click since their traffic is "free". I can imagine it working with a well targeted email list for example, or on some special pay per lead that you dont have access to.

Think about your past experience with the translation service where you were getting better results - in that case the company you worked for got to keep the whole order value, so they could afford to pay way more for the traffic than you can now. How many % does OHT pay you? There is no chance you can compete against them. It would require a well thought out conversion funnel where you would maybe build an email list, up-sell them stuff and co-reg to other lists etc ... I really cant imagine how this could turn positive ROI by simply linking to OHT, especially not with a broad targeted campaign across several GEOs. If there is any chance at all, you will have to target very precisely - like laser target - specific GEO, specific niche with very specific language that normal people cant translate, so keywords like : "moulding machine manual translation".

The fact that your account is new doesnt really have any correlation here.

Hi,
First of all - thank you very much for your time and information!

You are right - I get only 10% commission out from the PROFIT of the order. For example: client order translation for $50, Translator payout is about 75% ($40), so the profit is $10, and I get only %10 from that, so i get only 1$.

I knew that I will probably lose hence I tested it with a total of $100 only.

BUT I HAD THIS IDEA - Since i do have some background and experience with global translation services marketing online,
i can buy domains like ProfessionalTranslation.net / Translationservices.com ( or what else avaliable), build blogs and promote using SEO and Adwords + BING. Then, I can actually outsource my offered translation services using different providers (such as textmaster, OHT and more). basically, its just opening sort of translation company and
promote it using my experience. So eventually, its not my original goal... i guess i leave that for now.

anyways, thanks again for your help!

This place is great!

Yup, just like I expected, 10% commission from PROFIT is simply not enough to send any paid traffic to them, that simply cannot work out.

Building blogs and doing SEO is a different beast and if you manage to rank these domains, it can certainly bring in nice revenue. Buying traffic from adwords or bing and send it to those blogs will not work again, its gonna be a waste of money unless you plan to build a brand and promote it to get the word out and profit later - that would be a similar situation to your previous job.

Yep.. It will be similar to my previous job - it's not what I am interested in on doing nowadays.
I'll think of something creative to do with my knowledge in the field in the future, though. It is a great market which keeps expanding, especially online.

Thanks again my friend.

Yea, the payout is probably too low for this to work. If you figure costs per click are .35, and your avg commission is 1.50, you would need roughly a 20% cr to breakeven.

Your cr is super low though (0.6%)...

IMO, you would have to do the following three things to even have a CHANCE at making this campaign work:
1.contact the company and negotiate a higher %, and a % of LTV, and a longer cookie so you can compete with the brand advertisers
2. Focus on much cheaper cpcs
3. Focus on keywords/geos that generate bigger orders

im just in the begining of my AM journey, and want start with other more basic affiliation (Mobile Redirects, Dating for example).
