Desktop Conversions on Carrier traffic

Hi Guys,

I've running a mobile popunder campaign for carrier in Germany. Sending to this campaign for a first test just all carrier traffic to figure out what's working and what not. I saw after running around 5k clicks, that only the traffic type Desktop from OS Windows (not Windows Phone OS or Windows RT) is generating conversions. All traffic is from the targeted carrier, now Wifi.
The user has to enter his mobile number and submit for subscribe and generate a conversion.

My question is now, how excatly is carrier traffic on desktop devices working, how can i target that more properly if i see that conversions are coming from there?

Thanks for your inputs.
Regards,
Manolo

There are three possible answers for this :

1. you're getting conversions from a fallback offer - the aff network sends the traffic to another offer since its out of targeting.
2. the offer is optimized to convert on all platforms - so when they detect a user is on desktop, they show him instructions on how to signup for the offer using his phone. Then they send some code that the user enters on his desktop.
3. your tracking is showing you wrong data - it says the user is on desktop while in reality he is on a phone - no tracker is 100% accurate.

You should ask your AM about the possible reasons, ask about fallback offers and whether the offer is designed to convert desktop/wifi too.

Thx for your fast reply matuloo.
I will discuss the mentioned points with my AM, hope to get a better understanding then.

Regarding point 3: It should be pretty accurate since i'm running this campaign only on the IP-List i have for this carrier. But as you said, it's never 100% accurate. And it's actually a big part of the traffic which is showing as device-type "Desktop" on Carrier Mobile Connection. But only from one Trafficsource, the other trafficsources don't even send device-type "Desktop" when targeting by my IP-List.

What i'm curious about is, if it's even possible to have desktop traffic from a carrier connection, how that technically would work?

There are plenty of reasons for having that:

Surf Dongles also calles 3G sticks
Hotspots over Mobile phones
IP ranges are never 100% accurate and change daily

An explanation why the offer is converting only on Desktop 3G is that the offer is super sneaky and you have found a goldmine. Mostly its forbidden and not possible anymore to bang the user with mobile services over Desktop (Pinsubmit yes but no direct carrier billing) - but maybe the program owner found a hack for that.... I would be really glad if you can send me a PN with the name of the offer you use.

And a little advertising never hurt: We at Brokerbabe.com convert mobile pops quite well but its for the moment adult.... Hit me up if you are interested in that

Sounds like some problem with targeting or traffic identification when you say its just one trafficsource OR a sneaky offer as Stefan suggested.

Desktop on carrier : Stefan already answered this too : desktop connected through a mobile phone hotspot or a USB dongle (those USB devices you plug into your comp to connect to 3G network).

Desktop on carrier (3G dongle or mobile tethering) conversion still works in some rare geos (not in Germany that i know), of course not at the level it did years ago. I remember in my old media buyer days at the beginning of mobile carrier billing killing it in Italy and other geos buying cheap desktop traffic, filtering by carrier/wifi and converting it crazily.

While it was fine at the beginning, most of carriers disallowed that as it created big issues that nobody had thought about, like the desktop user not getting the subscription confirmation sms as of course you can't send sms to desktop, so they didn't know they had subscribed to an offer nor they could unsubscribe easily.
