TJ: Distribute Evenly or as soon as possible?

I am pretty new at adult, just managed to break even on a campaign. I have always set my campaigns to - distribute evenly. Is this a good strategy or once I find something profitable, I can switch it to as soon as possible?

Thanks!

Test both

Depends on your budget and how fast you want to optimise. If you have a limited budget and want to test how well your offer converts during each hour of the day then go for evenly distribution.

If you want to test and optimise quickly go for distribute asap.

I think the best option (of course if possible) is to do so evenly and once you have enough data scale in the best hours you had while going evenly.

Once you have data for all hours of the day, surely you will find some hours are not really profitable (or not profitable enough) and you better invest the money to scale the best hours.

Hey Smoochy!

How are you doing?

I understand your problem. I know it's always hard to know where and how to start. That's why I'm gonna give you an important tip: in order to find out how much you have to spend on a campaign, you should always focus on both the payout and conversion ratio. Moreover, you should know that you need a decent amount of stats so that you can optimize your campaign.

As an example, let’s say you have the same budget for two campaigns, one in France+Bouygues and another in Uruguay+Movistar. In France+Bouygues, the payouts will usually be much higher and the conversion rates much lower than in Uruguay+Movistar. Therefore, with the same amount of money, you’ll get much more traffic and stats in Uruguay+Movistar. By doing this, you can do a good optimization and start turning a profit in Uruguay+Movistar with less money and less time than in France+Bouygues.

That being said, I recommend you not to distribute your budget evenly for campaigns and markets that might not be even. Since you’re still starting, I'd suggest you spend your budget in campaigns from GEOs (Country+Operator+OS) that will give you good stats without making you spend your budget too quickly.

Another good option (especially in an adult vertical) is to create day-parting campaigns, focusing your budget only on the hours in which you know the eCPM will be higher. If you do this, you manage to have control - you're only investing on periods of the day in which you're positive the segment has the best possible performance.

As you become more experienced and start making money, you can also explore other GEOS in which you can definitely get more cash

I recommend you start with the following GEOs:

- Panama+CW+Android

- Honduras+Claro+Android

- Peru+Movistar+Android

In case you want more tips about new segments, eCPMs and much more, feel free to send me a private message.

Let me know how it goes and share the results here

Cheers!

TJ doesnt offer carrier targeting, so unfortunately, your advice is not applicable here

The algo of TJ is pretty advertiser-friendly, so even with the "even" distribution you will get your share of first impressions, so generally, the quality is pretty stable. This means you can safely start with the even distribution and switch to accelerated as soon as you are sure about your funnel - or lift the daily limit, which will have a similar effect.

I wouldnt recomend to use the accelerated delivery in case your budget doesnt allow you to run 24/7. You need to get an evenly distributed data sample, which would not happen if your daily budget has been hit by noon.

Hey,

Thanks for the heads-up @matuloo, missed the TJ part there.

@smoochy: My advice was taken bearing in mind that you’re starting with adult

In the case of TJ, matuloo’s comment covered it pretty well, so I’ll reinforce the main idea: the best option would be for you to start spreading your budget evenly since you’ll need stats to analyse and optimize your campaigns. If you were to choose spending as quickly as possible you might end up analysing a time period which isn’t even the best sample to use for your optimization. For example, you may choose to spend the budget as fast as possible, running the campaign full-throttle for 3 hours, possibly missing the best hours.

That being said, it’s best if you start by spreading evenly in order to get good stats to optimize. After optimizing and finding the best target, you can change it to accelerated while also not forgetting to increase your maximum budget (so as to avoid having your campaign stopped after a short period).

Day-parting is also an option if you want to get the “good” stats faster.

Do you work only with TJ? Have you considered other networks?

In Traffic Junky, they provide you ISP targeting, which is not so good because it includes both 3G and Wifi traffic, which have different performances due to the billing process. Exoclick is a better source for adult traffic. Besides the fact that Exoclick has tons of traffic, you have access to great stats and the option to target by carrier.

The advantage of optimizing by carrier with CPA offers is the different conversion flow: with carrier traffic, the phone number of the end-user is detected right away (MSISDN detection) meaning that the user can be billed more rapidly (through Single opt-in or Double opt-in) and without inserting his phone number. In Wifi, the service needs to get the user's phone number in order to bill him so the flow is more complex (pin submit or SMS billing) leading to worse conversion rates and performances.

Cheers!

Just wanted to add (so we dont confuse new people) that ISP or Carrier targeting is only an issue when you decide to push carrier billing offers (PIN submits), with dating its not important for example. Mobidea is focused at carrier billing products for example.
