Hello, I was wondering if there is any difference between the efficiency of carrier detection between trackers like
I was discussing with a friend and he told me self hosted scripts do not have a very precise database compared to hosted scripts because self hosted can just buy a single expensive database and use it for all its users while self hosted just cant give each users the same service because of the obvious cost involved. Any expert can enlighten us ?
You're right. FF cant track clicks by WIFI or carrier. Currently IMO only self hosted tracker can do this is iMObiTrax
Very interesting, thanks for confirmation !
@hangman - having been involved with the development of a self-hosted tracker I can confirm that problem. It's a major one.
Basically, buying a single license of even the MaxMind carrier database (not the best one out there) costs around $100 or so. If you're running a hosted tracking service, great - that's $100 for all your users. Stick it on a beefy database server and you're done!
(Just kidding - there's a lot more work to do than that. But the basic principle is correct.)
On the other hand, if you're offering a tracker to end-users to install on their own machines, you need a license per user. That means you either need to eat the licensing cost yourself or make the user pay for it. Neither are great options.
Now, imagine you want to use a better carrier database, meaning that instead of $100 licensing you're talking four or five figures per license...
It's a pain.
I can also confirm that Device Make databases aren't exactly crazily precise on self-hosted but couldn't compare to cloud trackers...
