Simple tracking question.

I have been reading the forum and one small question regarding finding "winners"

How do you track a conversion if the product is not urs? Lets say I am promoting a email submit offer.

I drive traffic to my lander then the person clicks 'get $100 giftcard' that takes them to the email submit page ... is them clicking that button considered the conversion? If not what is..

Apologies in advance. Its my first day on STM.

Hello,

read along the forum and take your time, judging by your question you are very new to affiliate marketing so there will be a lot of new things for you. Dont worry, we all have been there once.

To answer your question : this is done via click IDs and postbacks. To be able to track properly, you need a tracking solution, for example Voluum, funnel flux, Thrive... Every click that goes through the tracking will be assigned a unique "click ID" and this ID is passed to the affiliate network and to the offer. Once a conversion happens, the affiliate network/offer will send the ID back to the tracking - this is called the postback or postback url or tracking pixel. Now the tracking "knows" what click made the conversion and you can analyze where it came from, what banner it was, what LP it was etc ... this is all info crucial for the optimization process.

The conversion point will vary based on what you promote, what you described would be a Single Opt In (SOI) or a simple email submit, in case they require a confirmed email that would be Double Opt In (DOI) and the user has to click a confirmation link in the welcome email they receive. There are several other models used, trial, CC submit, PIN submit ... all have their own specific rules and the postback will only be launched once the conversion point is met.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum BTW
