Tips on testing Brand Messaging?

Hi STMers

I've got some downtime before I start building ad campaigns on my unmonetized e-commerce store. I built the brand in my spare time and just got around to trying my hand at digital marketing. I'm still solving some technical issues (I have like 3 support threads open right now) and have a little downtime before I ramp up advertising with facebook and wanted to retool my brand message to some degree.

The Product: Graphic Tees and Apparel

Target Audience: Bitcoin Users

Website: http://procrypto.net/

My Current Brand Message: Clothing that Promotes Bitcoin

I ran some ads late last year, but my target audience didn't respond well to them (high CPC, multiple negative comments on ads, 0 conversions). So during my downtime, I wanted to test new brand messages. I've brainstormed different angles that might resonate with my customers and now I'd like to run a few tests.

So, how would you test your brand message in advance of a bigger advertising launch?

P.S. Definitely still planning to do an ecommerce follow along once I'm ready to go. Stay tuned!

I usually test 1-3 designs before building out an entire store. It will save you time and the headache. You say your store has 0 conversions but there are people already sharing your shirts on instagram? Or are those your friends?

Bitcoin is a really small niche category. Only a few people mine bitcoin. You will have to spend a good amount of time testing.

I'm sure you have similar targeting to this Click image for larger version.

Name:	bitcoin.png
Views:	34
Size:	92.2 KB
ID:	10357

I would research pioneers of bitcoin, groups, movements, etc and add them to that list.

You might be better off doing SEO for the keyword "bitcoin" rather than paying for traffic as it seems like there isn't that much data for that topic yet. 1 million users is a lot but maybe a quarter of them are actually passionate about the subject.

You can go even deeper and maybe target people who are really smart and into computers and math. They will most likely be interested in bitcoin.

You can try targeting people who like computer science, math, crypto currency, programming, modding, etc.

Nah, the store has had conversions in the past, it was just that those ads I ran didnt produce any unfortunately. I've sold about 50 shirts with little to no advertising outside of that.

Curious though, when you test a handful of designs, are you using teespring first to gauge demand?

Also, do you think it would be smart to expand the focus of my designs for a wider audience outside of bitcoin?

And yeah, that's pretty much exactly the targeting I'd been using. I'm considering going worldwide though, as I've had sales out of Ukraine, Netherlands, and Thailand.

Is there any particular reason why you are limiting yourself to such a niche audience?

No other reason than that I was young and dumb. This is my first e-commerce experience.

Lions can catch, kill, and eat mice.

But they will die doing so because it’s a calorie negative endeavor.

So instead they hunt antelopes.

Don't waste your valuable time trying to catch small mice.

Go hunt for antelopes instead.
