Shodka8's Native Follow Along Entry - Scaling Native

Hi Guys,

I am currently running a US diet ad campaign on content.ad. I have some questions that I hope can help us all learn a bit more about native and how it can if it all be scaled.

Here is my campaign info to date:

Maybe this can be a follow along if I can get enough interest in here:

- Revenue: $2000.00
- Ad Spend: $5000.00
- Bids: Used the suggested bids for desktop, mobile, tablet
- Initial budget $120/day (messed around on certain days and bid up to $1.50 and increased daily spend to $1000.00; these were experiments. I find that increasing bids will lead to a boat load more traffic but not necessarily more conversions)

New Strategy
- $5000 budget for 30 days = $167/day
- Bidding about 20 cents higher than recommended for "Advertisements"
- So far achieving 1-4 conversions a day
- Immediately increasing bids on domain ids that convert to $1.00
- Blocking out domains that hit 3x CPA amount of $40.00 = $120.00
- I am using a presell page that so far is getting about 15% click through

Questions:

1. To really make this campaign work do I need to bid higher and have a bigger budget?
2. Are my current bids okay?
3. Is my bidding strategy of increasing bids to $1.00 on domains that get me even one conversion approrpiate?
4. Should I split test a bunch of offers in the same vertical?

Opinions/facts/thoughts/ideas/experience is welcome !

I hope to make this a learning experience for everyone.

"- Blocking out domains that hit 3x CPA amount of $40.00 = $120.00"

You're very loose with your approach here under consideration of your daily budget.

In general I cut way earlier if the CTR is not on track with the CTR of converting placements and / or an placement has a high amount of bot traffic.

02-25-2016 06:09 PM #3 shodka8 (Member)

I think the question here is what should we base it on. Should domains on your block list be there after a certain amount of dollar spend, clicks, CR% or lack of.

02-26-2016 01:35 AM #4 shodka8 (Member)

Just put in all the variables for content.ad. This will allow me to determine if placements are even leading to clicks on my presell page.

Testing here we go...

Keep an eye in the bot traffic.

As sebastian_r said, there are a lot of bot traffic.... you need to block these sites!

Look at this image:

Also you need to be careful with the autoclick traffic... I mean... you can have a high CTR in your Landing Page but don't have conversions... I have a site with CTR LP 84% and no conversions, that is because the publishers is doing auto clicking in your ads...

02-26-2016 07:28 PM #6 shodka8 (Member)

Wow!

Okay that helps clarify some of my frustrations. Going to trim the fat... Domina, how much budget and daily ad spend would you set aside for US diet.

02-26-2016 09:29 PM #7 deondup (Member)

Your budget is way too low mate. For US I would say $1000/day minimum. You should know that you are up against guys doing $5k/day tests

The biggest problem on Content.ad and RevContent is the vast amounts of crap sites from arbitragers. They tend to spring up out of nowhere and eat through your budget very fast.

Then there's also a ton of bots that look very natural - keep a close eye on ID's that have a high ctr on your landers

Lastly, there's a LOT of clicks coming from scrapers and spy tools. Block them asap! Look at the ISP data in Voluum and send them here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

Deondup.... mad respects. What you are saying is the reality we all face.

LMFAO to this video !

Question: If I block lets say an adscraper in Voluum... Will Voluum turn around and let the ad network know to block it as well. How does that work? Don't I have to tell content.ad to block the ip?

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you lmao

No, the only way to get stuff blocked by the network is to ask them to block the IP's. Its the only things they are willing to block but even that is a tough ask. They have absolutely no incentive to block anything. From my experience they just want to make money no matter how. If you are persistent and provide a lot of concrete evidence they might "say" they will but I found both Content.ad and Revcontent to be not nearly as "exclusive" as they sell themselves. Anyone and anything can get in there and publish a load of crap with bots clicking your shit.

Agreed...Last time I sent a Bot traffic report with like same IP clicking 400 times, they answered me, there is no sign of bot behaviour...

Hi Guys, need some help here so now after checking the ISPs and LP CTR as I understand all the hosting company that show in ISP and/or have like 50% or more CTR will be bot traffic and I should block them in the ad network , I was actually in the same boat as shodka8 testing for around 200 to 300$ a day I understand now that this is too low , but also testing with 1K a day with all the bot traffic that show will be huge loss.

OVH SAS - most of the spy tools use it and I guess some bots as well. LOTS of traffic from them on RC and C.ad

Redirect that shit! before it hits your landers. I have tried to get refunds for it but no luck.

03-02-2016 06:46 PM #14 shodka8 (Member)

Apparently content.ad does not have a cost parameter? I got an email from them today. Does anyone know how to track costs with them?

03-03-2016 02:35 AM #15 thuglife (Member)

Content.ad is shit quality-wise.

I'd ask for a refund and move on to Revcontent or cloak Taboola/Outbrain/Gemini/MGID.

Subscribe to Advault.io to see what's working and rip already working landers.

03-04-2016 12:53 AM #16 shodka8 (Member)

thuglife. Respects for the info.

I'm noticing quality is not the best. Especially when you blow 1k in a day only to see 2 conversions and the next day you got 30 clicks and 4 conversions.

Wonder if I can move this thread over... to the competition somehow.

Thanks for all the advice! When you say "redirect that shit before it hits your landers" are you talking about something we can do proactively to block it ourselves from being clicked/charging us, or do we have to let the ad network know and have THEM do it?

.03 CPC with a 65.00 pay out offer...... I hope you have scaled this to 10k++++++++ per day Jesus those stats looks amazing.

you redirect that traffic with your tracker to somewhere else other than your lander (but it would already have been charged as a click in Voluum)

the only way to get stuff blocked by the network is to ask them to block the IP's

see below.

Guys,

Im back in this bitch !

Okay new update here we go. I wanna win this bad boy !

- Created a brand new content.ad account
- Cloaking figured out and initiated
- Testing Diet offers from Mobooka, Advidi so far
- Testing 3 offers from 3 different networks. Might put in some more !!!
- Testing 3 different presell pages.
- Bidding strategy: max bid $2.00
- Split up Desktop, Tablet and Mobile
- $50.00 per desktop, tablet and Mobile to start
- ads got approved as non commercial... so min bids are desktop: 5 cents, Tablet: 3 cents and Mobile 1.5 cents
- I got a blacklist specifically for nutra as well but have decided to throw it in yet
- Tracking is perfect... I will be able to see exact domain ids for conversions
- 3 ad creatives being utilized each for Desktop, Mobile and Tablet

03-12-2016 11:52 AM #21 wannabe (Member)

I saw a lot of new good quality domain IDs when I setup an advertorial campaign instead of non-commercial. Don't know how valid it is because I haven't setup any non-commercial campaigns since then. Maybe it was because of the higher bids in general for advertorials.

03-12-2016 03:36 PM #22 shodka8 (Member)

So far... at their min bids for non commerical you basically get no traffic.

I wonder if you get the same domain ids if you bid the same as advertorial on non commercial.

03-13-2016 09:36 AM #23 shodka8 (Member)

Moved all my bids to the following as traffic was being weird a.k.a not coming in

desktop: 63
tablet: 38
mobile: 19

based on what happened above in this thread (first campaign with content.ad) looks like i need to wait up to 10 days blowing cash before the algorithm starts putting me on sites that actually get sales

On the plus side one of my landers is getting a 30% ctr. When I ran before it was 15%... I think this can make all the difference in order to make me profitable

Thoughts at this point

BTW:
- ad creative
- presells
- stats

all coming soon. Stay tuned

In it to Win It ...

I suggest you start by testing Desktop and if you really want test mobile as well but starting all 3 at once when your daily budget is set to $50 is pointless.

Your conversion value is $60-$80 (upsell and depending on geo) so $50 is just not going to give you anything to work off. You are far better of starting with Desktop and setting your daily budget to at least $300.

I know there are a lot of people cloacking and buying non-commercial traffic. You should certainly test it but start with what has the highest probability of success and then test everything else. With rebills bar is so much higher and you really don't get much data for $1000 so you have to be smart in how you spend unless you have large budgets to burn.

The most common mistake that most people make is to try and get traffic as cheap as possible. If you make $80/conversion you want to be getting the best quality traffic you can possibly get. On native the lower your bid the deeper into the session your ad gets displayed and (in theory at least) the lower the quality of the traffic.

300 at max bid 2.00 and international traffic?

03-13-2016 08:47 PM #26 shodka8 (Member)

blew $300 on desktop and not even one sale. Hate when that happens but its part of the game.
I'm going to do a large update shortly to get this thread going like fire and help us all learn through the process.

Was that non commercial ? Bidding $2 on that traffic is not a good idea.

The traffic that's available to content promotion is often just plain crap - that's why its cheap.

Most of that was probably from 2 or 3 big placements. It happens all the time and that's why you need big budgets. It even happens when you have well tuned campaigns where new pubs creep in overnight and spend $500 without any conversions.

Once you start you just have to keep going. It can be a scary ride - especially when you spend a thousand with hardly anything to show for it. TRUST THE PROCESS! At least you *know* that others are running exactly the same setup as you successfully - from what's running on the spy tools at least (same traffic, same ads, same landers). The game is very different with neutra on native because its not really about how creative you are. You can test 100 new angles and spend $10k finding a winner only to have 20 people copy it by the next day. You are far better off spending your time and money optimizing campaigns because that's the name of the game.

I would also not suggest that you test 3 different offers at once. When you start testing cold, get the top 2 offers from 2 different networks and run that. Make sure you get on the TOP offers - it makes ALL the difference. Caps is a big deal with neutra and many networks reserve the cap for their top affiliates and push the rest on to newbies.
