Wow, that's interesting.
Immediate and not very well thought out reactions:
- Even more clutter before the organic results? Not sure this change is going to stick around long-term once the press backlash hits.
- The obvious and possibly naive assumption would be that ad prices are going to go up as number of slots go down.
- Where is Google planning to make up the revenue shortfall from? Less slots to sell = less revenue. They're not in any way dumb, so what are they doing to replace that?
- Big changes = big opportunities. May be very worth keeping an eye on the stats for SE usage over the next little while - if there's a significant shift to Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc, they suddenly become more attractive targets for SEO and ads.

More people to bid higher for the top ad spots?

My initial reaction, as with all things Google, is they are doing it to generate more income, no doubt justified by being 'better for the visitor'.
So I think you're both right, less spots = advertisers have to bid more to get impressions. If your ads were outside the top 3 and you wake up today without any clicks
or impressions and that's costing you business then you either bid up or back off altogether.
http://searchengineland.com/google-n...results-242997 This article references Google testing the idea all the way back to 2010 so there's obviously a significant amount of thought that has gone into it.

My first thought was how this might be helping organic traffic, because they will focus more in on the results....Anyone rocking PPC ..... Gonna be paying alot more for clicks, but it will be of higher quality. Will that equal to a higher ROI?
Who knows
