Setting Up An Email Lead Capture Funnel In Funnelflux

One of the things I'm most excited about in FunnelFlux (the new self-hosted tracker I've talked about before) is the fact that it has a lot of capabilities around email lists, tracking optins, and similar things which are rather hard to do with a conventional affiliate tracker.

I'm a big fan of lists - I spoke about email capture at AWA amongst other topics - and having a simple way to monitor their performance in the same way as I'd monitor any other campaign is great.

So, here's a quick guide to setting up a basic email list campaign in FunnelFlux. You'll be able to track initial optins and double-confirms, meaning that you can quickly get an accurate idea of how much your conversions are costing you.

Let's get going!

What You'll Need

You will need:

And that's it! As always with Funnelflux, you won't need to know how to code - all of the setup is done by drag-and-dropping arrows to form the "flow chart" of your campaign.

Part 1: Preparation

Note: this tutorial was written shortly before a cosmetic update to FunnelFlux. The look of the software may have changed a little, but all the buttons should be the same.

Set up your Traffic Source if you haven't done so already in FunnelFlux. Click on Sources in the top menu, then Traffic Sources. Click "New Traffic Source". You only need to fill in the Traffic Source Name here.

If you want to set up a traffic source postback, just select "Postback URL" under "Fire Conversions Back to the Traffic Source".

If you want to set up tokens for your traffic source, put the name you'd like to use in "Tracking Field Name in URL" and the traffic source's token for that information in "Tracking Token from Traffic Source". For example, here's how I'd set up Go2Mobi's ISP token:

Once you're done setting your traffic source up, click "Save Traffic Source" at the top right to save it.

TIP: Create another traffic source called "Testing" here. You can use that to test your funnel without messing your stats up!

Next, set up your offer source by clicking on "Sources", then "Offer Sources", then "New Offer Source". You only need to fill a name in here. Given that you're effectively the offer owner, since you're tracking opt-ins to a list, call it something like "My Lists". Click "Save Offer Source" at the top right to save.

Finally, set up your offer pages. Veteran affiliates will find this weird - you've effectively got no lander in this offer. Because you control the offer (the email list), you'll just direct-link to it.

Go to "Pages", then "Flux Offers", then "Create New Offer".

For your first opt-in where they initially fill in their email address, use the URL of your initial opt-in page, and whatever name you like - I used "Initial Opt-In". Hit "Save Offer" in the top right to continue.

Now create two more offers, one for the "check your email" page, and one for the final thank-you page. For the "Check Your Email" page you can also set a value of the conversion - however much you believe a lead is worth to you.

Now let's get into the meat of the project, and set our funnel up.

Part 2: Making It Go

Go to "Campaigns", then click "New Campaign", and name your campaign. Click "Save Campaign".

Now, we create a Funnel. A Funnel is a sequence of pages that your visitors will go through - it can include filtering, split-testing, and as many landers and offers as you like. In this case, it includes all stages of your email funnel up to final opt-in.

Hit "New Funnel". Name your funnel, and hit "Save Funnel". FunnelFlux will work for a bit and then present you with a screen with a single node - your Traffic Node:

Now, right-click on the white space below the Traffic Node, choose Add Flux Offers, and pick your optin page. You should see it appear as a node.

Do this twice more, for your "Check Your Email" page and your "Thanks page". You'll end up with three unconnected nodes, like this:

Drag from the orange dot on the Traffic Source node to your optin node's orange dot. You'll see an arrow appear pointing from the traffic source to the optin node.

Do the same thing from the optin node to the "check your email" node, and then from the "check your email" node to the "Thanks Page" node. You'll end up with a flowchart like this:

Finally, double-click the "On Action 1" label between "Check your email" and "Thanks". A box will appear:

Click "This is a conversion". Close the box. Now hit "Save Funnel".

Final Setup

Now, all we need to do is to make this work with our mailing list software. Right-click on the "On Action 1" label between your opt-in and your "check your email". A menu will appear - click "Get Action's URL", and a box will appear:

Check that "Route Organic Traffic Too" is clicked, and then hit "Copy To Clipboard". Paste that URL into your mailing list manager as the URL for the "confirm your email page" - the page that visitors see immediately after typing in their email address.

Do the same thing with the "On Action 1" label between your check-your-email page and your final thank-you page. Paste that URL into your mailing list manager as your "final thank-you page".

And that's it! Everything should be up and running. Confirm that it's all working by going through the signup funnel yourself: right-click the "Traffic" node, choose "Send Traffic Here", and choose your "Testing" traffic source. Then go to the URL presented and follow through the steps.

Once you've done that, right-click the "Traffic" node, choose "Send Traffic Here", choose the traffic source you want to use for your campaign, and set everything up in your traffic source. Once it's approved, you're good to start running your campaign! Good luck!

Extending The Campaign

There's lots more you can do with optin campaigns beyond the basics. Here are a few ideas:

So that's it! I hope that was useful - if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, post 'em below.

Sick guide Caurmen!

I think many people overlook email collection and building lists but it can easily double or triple your campaign's ROI.

@bbrock32 - Yes indeed. I know that after the experiments I did for this year's AWA talk, I'll definitely be running a lot more lead capture in 2016. Can be incredibly profitable.
