A Newbs Guide to Affiliate Summit West 2016

Surviving ASW is easier said than done... you're in vegas after all.

No matter if you’re an Affiliate, Advertiser, Network, Traffic Source - if this is your first time to ASW there are a couple things you need to keep in mind.

Quick Disclosure: This is the first year in 5 ASW’s that I won’t be attending but I encourage everyone to go, have a great time and network like there’s no tomorrow.

1. Vegas is a desert
- Bring Lip Chap, Bring body lotion
- Ask for a humidifier from your concierge. If they don’t have one, fill your bathtub up with water and keep it full the entire time you’re there.
- Drink water all the time
- Bring cough drops or things to sooth a sore throat
2. You will not have time to sit
- Bring Bandaids
- bring comfortable shoes
3. You will stay up later than you planned - there are virtually no windows and there is oxygen pumping through those clubs to keep you up.
*or so they say about the Oxygen but the window thing is very true*
- drink lots of water re: point #1
- use a vibrating timer on your phone if you really want to get to bed at a certain time
- have your clothes out and ironed the night before so you don’t miss a single meeting
- Have emergency gatoraid & advil, or whatever your lack sleep + potential hangover remedy is ready for the morning after
- - if you're really ballin' you can go for the "hangover heaven" rememdy
4. Bring a portable charger
- there are little to no outlets at the conference and like I said earlier, you won’t be able to sit so when do you think you’ll have time to charge your phone?
5. Bring Business Cards
- You can’t network without them, and basically all affiliates avoid printing them.
- You need a system of keeping track of all the ones you collect but most importantly what you talked about in the first place. Post its stick and wrap easily over most business cards, a fine point sharpie is great for writing on even the glossiest of surfaces.
6. Put a limit on your debit, credit withdrawals
- Seen a lot of people in a world of hurt after a big night in Vegas at ASW. Limiting what you can spend, no matter how drunk and happy you get, will probably be for the best.
7. Cab Everywhere
- Unless it’s the hotel next door you’ll want a cab. There will be cab lines at every hotel, so you’ll need to factor this in.
8. Vegas isn’t warm year round
- Yes it’s a desert but that doesn’t mean it’s warm all the time in Nevada.
- Nights get pretty chilly so sweaters and small jackets are a must for the ladies.
- Forecast is looking pretty cold this year so it might be more than the ladies who need coats!
- This is why you won’t get any invited to sweet DJ pool parties this time of year.

And just remember, all of the business… it’s happening late night, during dinners, lunches, in scheduled meetings. You don’t necessarily need an ASW pass to get something out of the show.

Here’s the list of all the important parties this ASW 2016:

Vegas is a desert
- Bring Lip Chap, Bring body lotion
^^^That is really good advice, like really really good

If anyone passes the "Luxor" aka the pyramid casino:
My brother and I spent like 50 bucks at the arcade there when we were around 12 or 13. We used all of our tickets to buy those parachute soldiers (know what Im talking about?)...ended up with a total of 40-50 units, maybe more.

We went to the very top floor where the high-roller suites are and lobbed handfuls of paratroopers over the edge. The shape of that building in particular puts you directly over EVERYONE on the top floor, and back then part of the casino pit was directly below the pyramid's apex...it was awesome. Double awesome because we didn't get caught. We scrambled to the ground level and walked around snickering at the confused gamblers while they were all scanning the upper decks trying to figure out wtf. Everyone was smiling and thought it was funny, even the casino workers.

Anarchy!

So if you pass the Luxor, good luck not recalling this completely irrelevant story

Attachment 9482

This should put it in perspective, those fake skyscrapers were covered with parachute men too (we were on that side)...now that I'm thinking about this it was A LOT more than 40-50 damn

Great Vegas guide JaimmieF5.

I would add make sure you pay the cab drivers cash since there is some surge charge with credit card.

It seems also they now have Uber also: https://www.uber.com/cities/las-vegas

Fantastic guide!

Having failed to follow several of these tips at AWA, and suffered for it, I'd particularly recommend the humidifier - significantly reduces the chance of getting post-Vegas 'flu too - and the band-aids. Massive untreated blisters are no fun at all.

Oh, and if you're flying intercontinental to get there or get back, hydrate like crazy on the flight too! Picking up a random respiratory virus on the flight is very common and can really cut into your productivity either at or after ASW.

Just had to point out that the oxygen-pumping thing is and has always been a myth. Gamblers and partiers do not need extra oxygen pumped to want to stay up to drink and gamble.
