Any FINCH COMPLETE GUIDE Experts floating around?

This post is for anyone who is familiar with Finches really good AM guide and has successfully implemented his custom tokens technique on page 293..

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, the idea is to test 5 unique angles, 3 banners for each angle, and each angle having its own specific lander, and then having Voluum route the traffic to the appropriate lander using a couple of unique traffic source tokens and Voluum rules.

For example, when someone clicks on any of the of the three banners designed for Angle 1, they are sent to lander 1, designed exclusively for angle 1...same goes for all remaining angles.

Finch demonstrates how to achieve this by setting up two custom tokens in a new traffic source (exoclick) inside voluum. These custom tokens are {ang} and {angad}.

ang is for angle

and

angad is for angle + banner (remember, 3 banners for each angle).

When it’s all said and done the campaign URL should look something like this:

http://yourtrackingdomain.com/xxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx?ad={variation_id}&site_id={site_id}&z one_id={zone_id}&src_hostname={src_hostname}&ang={ang}&angad={angad}

Now I think the idea is to manually change the filename of each banner to something like this???

Angle 1
Image A: ang=ang1&angad=1A.gif
Image B: ang=ang1&angad=1B.gif
Angle 2
Image A: ang=ang2&angad=2A.gif
Image B: ang=ang2&angad=2B.gif

Then as the traffic source rotates through our uploaded banners and we receive clicks on Angle 1 banner A, {ang} and {angad} will be replaced with ang1&1A.

Two things should happen. First Voluum will see ang1 and know to serve our ang1 lander based on the custom variable rules that we set up.

And second, we’ll collect banner and angle data, which allows us to identify which angle and banner combo is working the best…

I am stuck trying to figure out if I understood this all correctly because when I re-name my banner images to something with an equal sign in them, ang=ang1&angad=1A.gif, Go2Mobi replaces the = sign with a _ sign which breaks the whole damned thing.

Am I misunderstanding the FINCHmeiseter?

I apologize if this sounds like you’re walking into the middle of a conversation while reading this…

Thanks in advance..

Gene

pretty sure you're doing it wrong.

your images should be named:
1A.gif
1B.gif
2A.gif
2B.gif

Then your links would look like

Code:
http://yourtrackingdomain.com/__sutff__&ang=ang1&angad=1A
http://yourtrackingdomain.com/__sutff__&ang=ang1&angad=1B
...
http://yourtrackingdomain.com/__sutff__&ang=ang2&angad=2A
http://yourtrackingdomain.com/__sutff__&ang=ang2&angad=2B

Update:

Changed my banner file names to reflect barmans suggestion and ran some traffic. Still a no go...

And just when I thought I had a grasp on tokens too, BAM! Confused again...

If I rename my banner to 1A.gif, as mentioned above, how does Voluum know what token that pertains to? Nothing is called out IMO. Especially the {ang}

I appreciate the help on this...

You have to change the URLs too, not just the file names

&ang={{your angle id}}&angad={{ your filename }}

I apologize for the bonehead newbie misunderstanding here but I only have one campaign URL, so how does one go about updating multiple url's?

Keep your banner names stupid simple, it makes your life easier (ANG001)! What's the traffic source? Are you sure you got ALL of their tokens you should? (sometimes sources are like top quality escorts. They not show you all of their nasty secrets until you spend high enough there or get shitface drunk with them at trade shows. Liver or money? It's your choice!

I'd use the creative ID / name token only from the source then create rules based on them. If banner name / id is matching for rule 1, then it redirects the user to lp pool 1 where you split test multipe landers matched with that banner style!

Btw, I'm not sure how you can do this with Voluum, never tried them!

Okay...I demystified this problem, which kinda solved it....So I started working some desktop campaigns and discovered a traffic source that works exactly like what @barman says and resonates with Finch's instructions.

Every single one of the mobile traffic platforms that I had dabbled (such as go2mobi) do not have this kind of freedom and flexibility. You upload a bunch of banners and there's only one campaign URL field...So this of course throws newbies like me off...

The desktop traffic source I recently played with allowed me to add some banners and each banner comes with a mess of options, such as campaign url, description, etc....So you can effectively have 8 separate campaign links after you've uploaded 8 unique banners, and each campaign URL can be modified to trigger custom rules inside Voluum...

Moral of the story is that one size does not fit all. If you want to run a similar flow scheme like the one mentioned in Finch's book then you are going to have to use a traffic source that will allow you this kind of flexibility...
