Find really, really hot products asking users to signup to a newsletter first for a free guide (clickbank is a good source).
Subscribe to as many of these lists as you can and watch your inbox get full of endless ideas. Then in a few weeks search based on the sender email and see how they're warming people up, the time frames etc etc. The big players test a lot, they know exactly what they're doing, how long to wait before they drop in the product, how much value to give, a lot, but never too much.
Print out each email in a month, make notes. Then post a thread here and share everything you learn!

study the email creatives used by VISTAPRINT - they are the master of the universe making hunderds of millions just with email marketing.
they have tested and tested and tested every single thing you can think of, so if you just use the colors, CTAs, and formats they use, that would be a great starting point. No need to re-invent the wheel, everything (or most of things) is already out there.
