What is the best network for advertisers selling software products?

Hi,

Quick background. Myself and a partner have recently created a software product in the mobile security niche. Its a Windows application but can be used to scan mobile devices for spyware, virus' etc. The product is unique and should sell well (if we can get some traffic to the site). It's available in several versions retailing between $30 - $200.

We currently have next to no experience with media buying etc, but hope that will change soon. We are currently running a small Adwords campaign to get our feet wet. In the meantime it seems logical to list the software on an affiliate network and let experienced affiliates sell it for us.

So, my questions are:

1. Can anyone recommend a reliable affiliate network that would a good fit for this type of product?
2. What is a typical commission range we could expect?
3. Or would we be better off setting up an affiliate program directly on our site? If so, any recommendations how we would promote this program to potential affiliates?

I would recommend you list it at revenuewire.com. They are software-centric and have a long time software affiliate base.

I would also recommend you offer a free scan to the end user first, with multiple license and/or extended year upsells.

Thanks technic, I'll definitely check out revenue wire. That's a good point about the free scan, I'll have think about how things could be restructured.

The higher the commission you give to your affiliate (network), the more traffic you will get as the affiliate's eCPM increases. So its basically a tradeoff between giving away margin and gaining volume. You know your cost structure better than anyone out here so you know how much you can 'afford' to spend on acquiring every new customer. Based on the revenue - cost structure you can determine a starting point and start working towards the optimal point in the tradeoff between margin and volume.
