New to mobile marketing.. Here's a Newbies Follow Along.

Hey Everyone,
Little about me My name is Jason and I tried mobile before but I wasn't in the right mindset. Made $40k a month for 3 months last year before pissing it all away and making poor decisions in the trading industry. I've always loved AM and had a lot of success with dating. Currently running an email campaign that profits me around $300 daily but I want to move on to something that interests me more also I don't see the longetivity in email marketing when it comes to staying on offers and buying leads. Tomorrow my whole campaign that makes me around $2100 weekly could poof begone.. So I'm taking everything i make for the next 2 weeks and dumping it in mobile. I know there is a lot of money but I don't feel it's for me. I like creating and learning new stuff. Enough about me.. I know mobile is super tough to optimize because of all the targets and variables but I want to try. I created this follow along to not only inspire people ,because I want to succeed at it so bad, but for motivation for myself and to keep me focused. So here's the details:

Day 1.
Budget: $2,000
Right now i'm doing some research and reading up on stuff here on the forum. I came acrossed the Appetizer for Go2Mobi and i'm going to start there since i'm new. I already have a Globalmedia account aka neverblue. I'm currently waiting for my AM to give me a list of offers that are converting well for others and have high volume. I've already deposited $100 into my go2mobi account.

As a test of just getting everything setup, I picked an offer on peerfly that was doing well and got some banners and uploaded to Go2Mobi. This is just to get familiarized with the setup. Right now I'm waiting for approval which I doubt will happen because of the nature of the banners but we'll see.

Here's my goals:
1st Month Short Term: Learn to test properly. Get a routine that works and will work for the future. Learn to atleast profit on the Appetizer before moving on to more advanced stuff.

3rd Month Mid Term: Get all the proper tracking like IMobiTrax or something. Move forward to the more advanced stuff. Know how to test 100% without thinking about it. Profit $100+++ daily.

6th Month Long Term: Become an amazing mobile marketer with the ability to make $1k+ daily and innovate in the area. Make this my most valuable source of income. Be uber super elite in making ads and knowing what works right off the bat with little testing.

Obviously I would like to get all this sooner then the specified times so I will be working 8 to 16 hours a day to perfect this.

That is all for now.. I will try to update as much as possible.

Besides the Mobile Cookbook. Anyone got any recommendations on where I should go for training while I wait. Like for banners and LPS etc etc

Good Luck! If you can get into F5Media It's great but at latest for me It's was a little bit harder.
I suggest you to join ClickDealer and MUNDOmedia, they are one of the best cpa networks & friendly for new affiliates.

Once again, Good Luck!

some points you should REALLY overthink:

1) "3rd Month Mid Term: Get all the proper tracking like IMobiTrax or something" - get a tracking solution before you buy your damn first impression! otherwise you spend money on data you do not use/store. which is similar to flushing money down the toilet. not too clever! go with Voluum, thrive or Adsbridge.

2) "knowing what works right off the bat with little testing" - this is not the road to success my friend! setup a testing routine. optimize, automatize, outsource. and test as much as you can!

3) "I will be working 8 to 16 hours" you will be ruining your brain, health, motivation and long term success by staring at your screen for 16 hours a day.

4) "Besides the Mobile Cookbook. Anyone got any recommendations on where I should go for training while I wait" - you already have more information than you need and can proceed. get active, test, test and test.

Hello !

Is great you define your targets and plans how to achieve them, this will keep you focused and permit you to follow your achievements evolution.

Now about mobile, I would suggest you to consider also the e-commerce vertical, since in my opinion is expanding to interesting trends and you could come out with some original and new angles for your promotion.
Speaking about e-commerce trends, I just happen to read an article saying that Mobile Devices make e-Commerce more and more available by bringing it to customers in Bed, bath and beyond
So think about

Good luck and keep up the good Job!

cheers,
ilana

Ok thanks.. So I should add tracking right off the bat then? Just wondering because he don't recommend it to start if your new with the cookbook.. Well not that he doesn't recommend it he just dont say to. I use POFpro for pof so I may go straight for thrive for now since my budget is not too huge. So thank you for that.

What I mean about #2 is not the fact of not testing testing but to get a good clue as to what works and what doesn't right from the start. So I don't spend as much of a budget ya know.
3) 8-16 hours a day has always been my work ethic online. Somedays I may only have to put in 2 hours but others maybe 16. I don't plan on making it 16 hour days al day everyday :P

Thank you so much for the advice.. Much appreciated!

Hi Ilana. Thanks for the advice on the e-commerce vertical.. What do you mean by this? Selling products on mobile? Don't have a much of an idea when it comes to selling products. I use to sell on ebay and did well. Are you talking about affiliate product offers? I'm confused.. Thank you..

Day2.
Still waiting on ad approvals. Going to take the advice and run with it. Setting up some cheap tracking today while I wait.. Also still waiting on these network approvals so I can get going on this stuff. Once I pick an offer I want to run with I will have more to say! As for today.. I will be spending most of the day educating myself probably on banners and landing pages to get a better understand what works as well as angles.

What is recommended for a newbie? Display ads or Popads? Anyone got a good workflow chart I can follow to start and get a routine flowing?

11-09-2015 08:30 AM #10 ivocado (Member)

1) good decision to setup tracking! the tracker is your best friend when it comes to mobile optimization. some traffic sources have a relevant statistics and conversion tracking. so it is possible to start without your own tracking solution. but i see no reason why you should.

2) got ya! many people in our industry spend too much time becoming "smarter" and forget about the #1 reason for success - the execution. always good to remind.

just search the forum and you will find plenty of follow-alongs and tutorials for different traffic sources.

display or pop... the majority of newbies will take the pop's! do you wanna be the black sheep? i would

The primary reason to start without tracking is simplicity: setting up a tracker for the first time (particularly a self-hosted one) can be a total bear, and hence we advise in the Mobile Cookbook to start out using your traffic source as a tracker initially. That also means that by the time you start setting up a tracker, you have some idea what it should do

However, there's absolutely nothing wrong with starting using a tracker right from the outset - it's how I started out years ago, because the traffic sources I was using required landing pages right from the get-go!

If you're going to use a tracker I'd recommend using a modern one. Voluum's the simplest to get started with because it doesn't have any configuration issues. Thrive and FunnelFlux are other newcomers on the scene with excellent reputations so far - they're self-hosted so a little trickier to set up, but also offer a lot of bells and whistles.

Yes, I mean product offers which can be promoted by affiliates. For example fashion offers like Asos.com or software/utilities offers like Norton Antivirus security.

Thank you all for your advice and encouragement.. So I did a test run just to get used to setting everything up with Go2Mobi. Ended up spending $20 with no converts so I killed the campaign.

Today i'm going to look into Thrive 30 day trial and get it setup on my server before starting my amazing journey. I've revamped by goals a little bit to fit my work ethic.

Also, ilana already planned on e-commerce so thank you for recommending it.. Lets me know that it will be a good choice.

I also got the list of top offers from Neverblue. I'm going to go through them today and pick 10 offers I want to promote.. Make angles for each one and start launching a campaign a day till I find a winner or start to get conversions on one.

So
Day 4-

New campaign I launched I found was a dud. I could probably make a lander and get it to convert but I decided to move on. I know some offers just won't convert without a lander but I feel that if a campaign converts with direct linking chances are it will be a winner if optimized right with a good lander. So yea ($20) in the red so far with my mobile journey.

Todays Plan:
I will setup a tracking system which may be Thrive.
Find 10 offers I want to start with.
Come up with 2 angles for each offer.
Make 8 banners for each angle/offer.
And Launch 1 Campaign.

Profit/Loss for my mobile journey- ($20)

Day 5

Just wanted to do a quick update.

Decided to just go full force here.. The reason being. I'm going to get AdPlexity. I'm going to get a dedicated server and Thrive.

I love how AdPlexity will give me an edge and help me spy but create something new. So yea. THat's just a brief update.

Still Profit/Loss (20)
Setting everything up for launch hopefully by Friday. Would like to get some campaigns running by the weekend.

Hey all,

Stats:

Spend: $33.53
Revenue: 12.32
Profit/Loss: 21.21

I've decided to switch to pop ads. Seems a little newbie friendly because I don't have another thing to worry about when it comes to banners.
So far i'm getting converts. I've got some questions. What's a good average bid per cpm on popads? I keep messing with my bid up and down and I feel like it's not a good thing to do because I can't find a happy medium. Is it best to be a higher bidder , med bidder, or low bidder? How would you recommend I test bids?

Not exactly sure when to cut either? When each placement is 3x the offer ammount?

Btw how come Voluum wont track spend?

Thanks in advance guys. Looking forward to make this a green campaign.

Hey Hey.. It's been a little while before I updated.

My campaign is still in the red. I've been weeding out little by little the websites that don't do anything for my campaign. I still have everything in one campaign at the moment trying to get some good data. It's been almost a week.
Here are my stats:

Impressions:75,139
Clicks:3,721
Conversions:338
Revenue:$157.92
Cost:$278.54
Profit:($120.62)

I feel like at the beginning of this campaign i' messed with too many variables by upping and lowering bid instead of just letting it run like it was.
So now i've started from a point and really started to keep track of stats from there as I haven't changed anything. I found a happy medium for my bid finally and going from there.

Any advice on when to cut websites when doing Mobile Pops? So far I've been cutting around 1.5x the payout so if its $.50 I cut at .75. Is that ok? Feel like i've blasted through a lot of budget messing with this.

Thanks in advance!

For popads, I like to set up several camps that are exactly the same except for bids. Either 3 camps: average bid, low bid, high bid. Or 5 camps: really low bid, lower bid, average bid, higher bid, really high bid (remember to set a low daily budget on the high bid camps!) Run some traffic to all camps and you'll quickly see which one gives you the best bang for your buck - then you can choose to use just that one for subsequent testing.

On cutting placements: If you're in the testing stage (offers/landers/both) you'll need to have enough traffic so as not to slow down testing. If you're getting a LOT of traffic, feel free to cut placements very aggressively so that you're only using the best traffic for testing. Doing so will allow you to test for cheaper. However, when you're in the green - i.e. you have a good offer + good lander - you'll want to go back and retest some of those placements. If on the other hand, you're not getting a lot of traffic to start with, then you'll want to go easy on cutting placements - only cut the ones that are obviously bad. For more details please see this post.

Regarding Voluum and tracking spend - I don't think any tracker can track spend accurately unless the traffic source can post back costs directly. Are you using popads.net as the traffic source? If so, that happens to be one of the few sources that DOES post costs back to the tracker. It's not very accurate though - you've been warned! All you need to do to track costs is put the [BID] variable into voluum's traffic source settings for popads:

Hope that helps!

Amy

Day 13
Hey everyone.. First I want to thank Vortex for giving me some much needed advice.

It's been a rough week until last night when I depleted my budget till i'm payed. I finally found the right bid to make my campaign profitable with 0 placement cuts!! The traffic is alright and just this one campaign has the potential to make xx a day. Scaling will be quite easy. So without further or do.. Here at the stats i've had since the start of all of this.

visits:499,050
clicks:44,288
conversions:3,029
revenue:$1,491.60
cost:$2,125.50 (this is actually a little higher)
profit$633.88)
ROI: -29.82%

Now here's my campaign I finnally found to be profitable.. Reminder it's just a couple days old so a lot of work to do but I'm so happy I finally found the best combo because I know this offer works along with my lander.
It's tested to do well. It was just a matter of finding the right bid!
Visits: 17,287
Clicks: 1,445
Conversions:120
Revenue:$60.93
Cost:$50.22
Profit : $10.71
CTR:8.36%
CR:8.30%

I know it's not much but I'm SOOO HAPPY! This isn't even the campaign running a full day.. With some optimizing and scaling i'm sure to hit xxx profit days in the next week.
I'll update on more. After i've done everything I can to this campaign including scaling I will be moving on to the next. I've been very focused on just this one campaign and haven't given up on it.
My belief is if I know this offer converts with this lander and I can't get it profitable then I should just quit. Well I dont want to quit. I'm going to keep pushing and pushing until I get it profitable.

Thanks for what everyone does here. More updates coming soon!

Questions:
Should I place exit pops and entry pops to boost my CTR? Any advice on this? That's really the only thing is boosting my CTR for my CR. I'm wondering though if I do that if it will actually drop my CR rate?

Great thread, definitely try entry/exit pops, and keep testing.

Congrats on your early successs! Hopefully the campaign will remain profitable for you once you restart with new budget. Very often, campaigns tend to loose performance when you scale them up, so don't be surprised when this happens. You will most likely need to change a few things also when porting it to new sources, so be prepared for that too. You are on the right path tho, so I wish you a lot of success.

As for entry/exit pops on your landing page - first of all, always make sure if it's ok with the traffic source. Usually they don't object if its a simple un-chained window. JS entry alerts cause problems sometimes, but they do increase LP CTR. With higher CTR, the CR will amost surely fall down a bit, you will need to compare the final numbers to see if it actually made any sense or not to use the pops. Its pretty much a case by case type of thing and needs to be tested.
