Exploiting current affairs

I dont know how many of you are aware, but yesterday, a female jockey won Australia`s Melbourne cup which is Australia`s most prestigious Thoroughbred horse race (marketed as "the race that stops a nation").

Michelle Payne, the jockey, is the first female to win it (the race is 155 years old) and it is kind of a big deal there (or for whoever follow horse racing I assume).

The reason im posting this is that it is an angle that can be exploited in promoting stuff targeting Women in AU. Its not something that could have been anticipated (odds were 101-1) but now its an option.

I think its an interesting one :-)

As I previously posted (and many of you know) - taking advantage of current affairs can be very smart thing to do.

You take an event or a news story that will surely get a lot of media and you use it in order make money.

This time, the current event\news story I want to mention is the "Severe flood warnings in the UK" that are emerging in the last few hours.

The UK's Environment Agency (EA) has put 27 severe flood warnings in place, along with 90 warnings and 84 alerts, as the country continues to experience unprecedented flooding across northern England. The "severe" warning means there is a danger to life.

Of course, bad weather isnt something new in the UK, and news agencies tend to exaggerate these things (I wonder why...) but it it an opportunity.

Even if you dont manage to create a campaign RIGHT NOW in order to capitalize, you can use it as an angle in the next few days/weeks. Think about Life insurance, home improvement, home insurance, car insurance, ecommerce (warm clothes, winter products) offers. We all know scare tactics work and in this case the news are doing the work for you...

You can find the info on the warnings here:

And if you are in the UK (or anywhere for that matter) stay safe and happy holidays :-)

Hey Stackers,

This time I want to talk about exploiting current affairs but in a different matter. Previously I wrote about taking advantage of current affairs in your angles.
This time I recommend you take advantage of exploiting the current affairs in order to promote the current affairs (kinda).

As "some" of you may know, the Super Bowl holiday is less than a month away. Other than it being a huge sports game, its a HUGE event. The biggest stars perform at half time, every talkshow and many shows in general reference it in their episodes that are broadcasted close to the Super Bowl date.
Its now a major cultural thing.
The ratings of the "game"? Last year it averaged 114.4 Million viewers per minute, becoming the most watched event in American TV history.

According to Twitter it was the most tweeted event ever with more than 28.4 million tweets containing terms related to the game and halftime show were sent from kickoff through a half-hour after the game’s end.

According to Facebook, the conversation regarding the event was larger than ever. 265 Million comments, likes and posts surrounding the game.
According to Marin Software`s data, the CTR of Facebook ads were up 9% over prior Sundays and CR was up by 415%!!!

These are the cold stats. But what is interesting to us is that recently, the Super Bowl commercials became a very anticipated thing themselves. Viewers are looking forward to them and advertisers in return produce expensive ads just for the Super Bowl.

What is my point? I think it can be a very good idea to try and promote the same brands that will have commercials in the game. Wix for instace had a great commercial last year and will have one again this year. I think it will be smart to try and promote them before, during and shortly after the game. After all the brand is guarenteed to have huge huge huge awareness to it at those times. Huge!

Of course there will be other brands that will have commercials during the game, think about using it for your ADvantage.

Info on the social data (Twitter, Facebook) and much more interesting info can be found here:

Info on commercials that are expected to present during the game can be found here (and in many other places):

Hey Stackmasters,

Following up on my previous post about the Super Bowl and how it will be smart to try and ride the waves of the huge buzz it creates, here is the commercial Wix will air during the game featuring Kung Fu Panda:

If you decide to do the smart thing and promote offers that are related to the event and especially if you wat to run Wix - affiliaXe has a special bonus for this offer so make sure you ask your affiliaXe AM about it.
