How can I research a vertical?

Hi guys,

I am looking for some advice on how to go about researching a vertical. I am going to do mobile gaming so any generic advice on how to research a vertical or specific advice on this niche would be will be much appreciated.

I realise that my campaigns will reveal a lot but a bit of research might help to point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Matt

I have close to zero experience in gaming, but will give you a pointer I learned from zeno during the 6-week affiliate mastery challenge (6WAMC) course back in feb. this year.

(BTW zeno's the guy to follow if you want to promote mobile gaming. I'd strongly advise for you to seek out his posts on the topic.)

There are many types of different games, and different people are interested in different types, so you would most probably want to use traffic where you can target by interests, such as facebook. Play the game you want to promote to find out what it's like, which genre it belongs to, and then find as many other games as possible that are in the same genre, the more similar to the game you're pushing the better. Then you can seek out fan pages for those similar games, and people that have listed those games as their interests.

I'd imagine you could also do this with on mobile DSPs such as Avazu mDSP, Go2Mobi etc., by targetting app placements for similar games. I don't have experience doing this myself though.

There are exceptions to the "target by interest" requirement: If you have a game that appeals to almost everybody (Candy Crush comes to mind) then maybe it would be worth a shot to run RON traffic to it. Again, I'm just speculating here.

A lot of speculation on my part. But if nothing else, I'm helping to bump this thread - hopefully some gaming experts will see it and provide more insight.

Thanks Amy, I'll start stalking Xeno today

I like the idea of how to target others by looking at similar games, seems like a very smart and direct way of doing it. I have started reading reviews of games and a lot of the reviews compare them to similar games in the genre. I suppose if I like the various fan pages I will get a good view of the competion.

Exactly! Liking a bunch of fan pages will make ads show up. To this day I'm still seeing DOTA-related stuff appear in my newsfeed lol!
