Landers vs Direct linking

Hello stackers!

Question
Has anyone here had a successful campaign run by direct linking? Is there any scenario where direct linking would be better than landing page?

The way I see it is that, even if a direct link is profitable, there is ALWAYS a way to make it better using a lander. Well, at least that's what common sense tells me. Even if the DL is generating $x,xxx per day.

I see landers as massive real estate space. Instead of someone seeing the traditional google play store page, you can prepare them and hopefully persuade them to download the app or whatever it is you are trying to make them do. Make them want the app before they even visit google play is how I see AM working.

Whats your thoughts on Landers vs Direct linking?

Interesting topic. I know that the common feeling is that a prelanding page is almost always necessary, and it makes a lot of sense to me for a number of reasons.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that there are significant exceptions to this "rule".

Cheers, the harder the conversionflow is the more I would skip the lander. Our main biz are adult products with direct carrier billing. If the payment flow is only: Are you already 18 click yes, then a Lander would kill be not smart. When you have to enter your Phone number, a mail adress, pay per creditcard or download something a Lander is your way to go. Talk to your AM what the offers are and his opinion about it. He will tell you if it makes sense or not.

When I spy, I hardly ever see mobile game banners that don't direct link to Google Play Store.

That's interesting and kind of makes sense to me i guess. But perhaps not give up on the lander and try out a few new ones? Except of course if you're split testing them and DL is by far converting much better.

I haven't promoted games yet but I can see that working. I've been playing games for over 25 years and I wouldn't like to see a lander either but what I do once I get there is look for rating and testimonials. If there's too many recent negative posts, I won't bother. Perhaps a well designed lander would change my mind in this case though.

More opinions on this topic in general would be great!

Hello All!

In my opinion, when promoting through display, on websites dedicated to a specific niche let's say financial or a blog on Health... using direct linking from banners or text links, can work well enough. Moreover, a pre-lander page could kill an important part of the traffic, as the users have to go through an additional stage before getting to the final offer page - funnel.
Nevertheless, as you also were mentioning, there are offers for which a lander would only get the traffic more curios and ready to explore.

For promoting on search, direct linking might be a great solution, from I personally know. However is important to be aware of common issues to be avoided such as advertising on the same keywords with the advertiser or developing your own ad content which is not matching their general messaging.

Regardless, in my opinion the need for a pre-lander depends also on the offer itself, including how much it is a worldwide known brand or less and the promotional method used.

cheers,
ilana
