3 marketing lessons we learn from Tinder

Tinder, the dating app, is reminding/teaching us a few important things in marketing.

Tinder (if theres anyone who isnt familiar with it) is a dating app that shows you other users in your area (you define the area). It shows you their pictures and maybe a few words on themselves. When you see a persons profile, you can either swipe left (to say you are not interested) or right (to say that you are). If the other person swipes right on your profile as well (you dont know if someone swiped right on you unless you swipe right on them) the app makes the connection between you. Quite simple.

How big is Tinder? Big. 50 million active users and 1.7 billion swipes daily. The average Tinder user spends 77 minutes every 24 hours on the app.

So what does it teach us?

1) Simplify. Less is more, you either swipe left or right. Its easy and accessible. KISS principle.

2) Recreate the familiar. You dont have to invent something new. There is nothing special or groundbreaking in Tinder. You see a picture of someone and you say if you are interested in getting to know them or not. Not exactly revolutionary. Its just a fresh way of doing something familiar.

3) Market with fun. Tinder is nothing more than very addictive game disguised as a dating app. If its a competition or has game-like feel to it, it will get the users attention and engagement.
