A great angle gets viral

We talk here (there, everywhere) on angles for campaigns but some people use angles in "real life" as well.

Hubbub, an Environmental charity, used a cool angle in order to get people to throw their cigarette butts in a big ashtray that portrays a question. Instead of just throwing the butt, they encourage smokers to throw it in a special ashtray that has 2 cans. Each can is "an answer" to the presented questions (or a poll) and thus by throwing your cigarette butt in the can you participate in the poll.

It went viral when they used a simple questions: "Who is the best football (soccer) player in the world - Ronaldo or Messi?". Football (soccer) is of course very popular and very passionate in the UK.

Soon after they launched the "campaign", they got calls from big media outlets (The daily mail, Bild, the Evening Standard...).
Not long afterwards, it got viral on Tweeter and Facebook.

Why the angle? They found out that most people who are littering are young men and that cigarette butts are the item most littered.

A little research and one simple question in a field that we are not used to think in "creative" ways about makes big waves.

Very interesting! But not surprising.

People LOVE to be asked about their preferences. This is why landers that have 2 images with a question that says "Which one is better?" work so well (or at least did for a long while!) I have a website on IOS app reviews and game walkthroughs that in its prime was receiving over 1 mill uniques/month - where articles that compared 2 gadgets against each other always got the most page views (e.g. "iPhone xx vs. Samsung xx - Which One Should You Get?")

Thanks for the post Oran! May apply a similar angle to my own landers soon.

Angles that cover articles with lots and lots of content (preferably with a video) on there generally work well as well.

Especially if they explain how the user can take advantage of a certain offer - in most cases rebilling offers that can be canceled.
