ORM - online reputation management

hello stackers!

A friend of mine is a small business owner and he asked me for help:
his business was involved in a indecent scheme and the result is a google search of his business name shows a first page result he doesn't like: a court order with a brief overview of what the problem was.

The SERP is from a government authority site (similar to FTC)

he wants to know:
1) if it's possible to push that one down further to second or even third page of google search results
2) if he can do it himself easily or he needs to hire a SEO company specializing in ORM

any help (even with a point to the right direction) would be appreciated!

(btw he's learned his lessons and wants to start clean again; but that particular search result would make it very hard for his business...would giving his business a new trading name be the most cost-effective and easiest way?)

hello

There are 2 ways to handle reputation management:

1) Out rank the offending rankings with positive reviews, videos, press releases, twitter accounts, FB accounts, Articles, etc.

2) Penalize the offending page. (more difficult with sites like ripoffreport)

Our favorite approach is to flood the serps with good positive reviews and content about your company.

We create content Like

HD Video
Power Point Slide
PDF and Document
Infographic
Audio/Pod-cast
e-Book
Cinemagraphs
Typography
Memes

I hope it helps

thanks

I am pretty sure the strategy of trying to penalise the FTC website is not going to work.

have you considered offline reputation management? if the company does offline checks, i think they rely on what people say more than what's online.

constantly deliver value to the core structure of his existing customers, and then when there is new business, they can cross reference, you almost always get the deal based on reliability and credibility.

thanks for all of your great comments!

if it's too hard, expensive and too time-consuming, would it be a good idea to just start trading under a different name?

The approach that luckyman suggested is the way to go about it.

It can be difficult but not impossible. When it comes to ORM, it's just a matter of time. Creating the positive content, getting it indexed, and then outranking the negatives requires a lot of time.

I did ORM for a client who had a negative article on the NY Post and it was on the first page. After about 3 - 4 months, it is now sitting on the second page. But the client was on my ass the whole time and I had to explain to him that it doesn't go away in a week, lol.
