Hey everybody. Setting up
After setting everything up, Charles recommends "Setting up a Custom Domain name" ( http://charlesngo.com/voluum-domain-setup/ )
My question is based off this:
"All campaigns have the trackvoluum.com domain by default.
This is not ideal because some traffic sources have banned that domain.
We’re going to use the domain NgoVoluum.com as an example. The goal is instead of having your links show as
http://otuyh.trackvoluum.com
We’re going to have it show as http://track.ngovoluum.com. Doesn’t that look much cleaner?"
Does this mean I need to purchase a separate domain name strictly for tracking campaigns ? Could I use my existing landing page domain name CNAME'd like this: track.landingpage.com ( for tracking ) & www.landingpage.com ( for landing page display ) ?
It's not necessary to have separate domains for tracking and landing pages, but it's good practice.
If you're just starting out then it doesn't matter much. It's easier to use the same domain in the way that you mentioned. Depending on your setup this may actually reduce the number of DNS lookups so visitors reach the landing page faster but the difference will be minuscule.
As you launch more campaigns you may want to use multiple domains for tracking and landing pages. There are many reason for this, such as having backups in case a domain gets blacklisted or a server goes down, presenting more relevant URL's to visitors, making it harder for competitors to find all of your creative materials, record keeping, etc.
If you buy a new domain look around for coupons. Many registrars have deals for new domains but they charge higher prices for renewals, if you're just using the domain for purposes like tracking then you can keep switching to new domains.
Thanks a lot for clearing that up for me. There are some good advantages you mentioned that I would have never thought of... I will go ahead & have a separate tracking domain.
Thanks again for the help.
