Are text ads performing better then banners on Mobile?

Some products works better with text, usually we come across with products that graphic advertising don't really give the right message to the users so he can understand what the advertiser has to offer.

Games for example is a vertical that graphics pass their meaning perfectly, On the other hand Utilities is an example for something that text pass the advertiser's message in a much clearer way to the user.

We are a network that running banners and also text ads and these are few of the conclusions we've got to.

I'll be happy to hear from your experience, How do you see these 2 advertising methods one compares to the other ?

What works best for you ?

Thanks!

Hello ezmobile,

From my experience, banners are one of the key parameters on the campaigns and it's worth it to spend time optimizing them to find the best one according to the offer and the spot. I have been testing lots of them on the Adult niche but the logic can be applied on the other ones. As I said, the spot is very important when deciding to use either text or image banners: for a 728x90 I would use a text banner but for an NTV I use an image one. It's just a matter of testing them.

I apply this logic because I work on a CPM basis and the CTR is really important.

Let me share with you an article that can clarify your thoughts about this: http://academy.Mobidea.com/mediabuy/...e-performance/

Remember that this banner topic is huge and complex so don't hesitate to contact me if you wish to get more insights

Cheers!

On a text ad/text link you'll get a lower CTR and higher CR compared to a banner.
This makes sense as the text link is harder to "detect" for the user so less people will click but the ones that do click are more interested in your product (they did not get convinced to click by a flashy/sexy banner).

Regarding banners, the best performing banner is usually the good ol' school 300*250 but other good formats are the 728*90 and 160*600 (on desktop)

Text+image is a banner, text alone is a text ad, lets not mix these two together A good banner will almost always have some text on it, at least a call to action button or something like that, so yes its true, text + image is the way to go.

Back to the original question, I've always done better with regular banners than text ads on mobile, its true that the CR might be better with text ads, but banners make up for it with WAY larger CTR.
Even on traffic sources like google adwords, I did way better with banners, text ads didnt cut it for me.

In the case of mDSPs, the most common banners are system notification/download banners. No relevant text whatsoever.

I saw a post on this forum that text ads perform better for sweeps in terms of ROI. I wouldn't be able to verify though.

It's the most common type of banners because it has the highest CTR, which means cheap traffic and lots of it.
What kinda results you can get with it is a different story, some can do it some cannot
It works pretty well with some offers, but totally bombs with others.

I still consider these "banners" tho and and not text ads. There are graphic elements used, buttons, colors, flashing stuff etc ... When talking about text ads, I always have the adwords type of ad in mind, like you see in the right column when googling for something. So a pre-set type of ad, with defined structure and text lenght...

Its really hard to say what works where, as it can be different from person to person, all I can talk about is my own experience. From some reason those text ads never worked for me, I was always better with banners. Even with adwords for example (app installs), I did way better with small banners than text ads. And this goes both for mobile traffic and desktop, adult and mainstream - banners always won in my case Maybe other have different experience, but this is mine.
