Adwords - minimizing desktop clicks

Hey guys,

I'm running a number of adwords campaigns with 300% mobile bids.

Everything is going pretty good, but I'm looking for methods to reduce desktop clicks without sacrificing mobile volume.

I've heard of a method where creating desktop-targeted ads with low QS can work pretty well, but don't have much info.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

-Jonny.

Have you tried Call-Only campaigns? You'll only get clicks from devices that can make calls and the majority of the traffic comes from mobile phones.

Remember that with Call-Only you don't need a mobile bid adjustment.

Yes, I am working on several call-only campaigns also.

As per what everyone else has been saying, the initial cost is substantially higher...I'm assuming that this is because time plays a larger factor in determining QS.

Early results show higher CR from the 300% campaigns, but I will keep monitoring both until I have something solid.

This is niche dependent, but I very much recommend testing desktop traffic as well. People are still using desktops and laptops and WILL make calls from a desktop landing page. DO NOT discount this traffic. For one of my campaigns I am finding that my desktop traffic is actually of a higher quality and results in higher conversion rates.

Of course, it is going to vary by niche, but it is certainly worth testing. You could be missing out on volume.

To reduce desktop traffic, I ONLY create a mobile preferred ad. I don't even bother with a desktop ad.

Another thing you can try is to write a really good mobile ad and a really bad desktop ad. You check the mobile preferred box for your mobile ad and you leave your poorly written desktop ad unchecked.

The theory is that your mobile ad should have a good CTR and Google will decide to show it. Your desktop ad will have a terrible CTR and low ad position and probably not even show up after all.
