My Mobile Training (19)

My Mobile Training

So I figured it's time for me to start a follow along to start my training as a Mobile affiliate.

I hope to look back at this one day to say, "Man I remember those days."

The plan is to focus on quality app installs and lead gen offers on mobile display. I will try to keep my updates as concise as possible and not have a large wall of text for people to have to read through.

This is where I am at right now:

1) Mobile Affiliate Networks: GlobalWide Media, Appflood

I am with other networks as well but they don't really have app installs. I also applied to Yeahmobi, Matomy, and Clickdealer. I was rejected by Matomy.

I kept going back and forth with Yeahmobi. But there seemed to be a language barrier when I was trying to set up a time for a skype session since we are 12 hours apart. I kept getting random 2 a.m. messages when I am out like a light. I thought that the language barrier might be somewhat of a problem so I moved on.

I need to follow up with Clickdealer as I had a skype session with them and sent what they asked but did not hear back. I decided just to focus on Appflood and GlobalWide Media for now so i can get more experience in mobile marketing before applying to others.

2) Traffic Sources: Decisive, Go2mobi

I am using the Mobile Cookbook: Appetiser as a guide so I am not using a tracker right now.

Next, I will post my latest campaign with the banners and offer.

I was rejected by Matomy
If you like, send me a PM to ask for my contact at Matomy and we'll get you set up there. Also, if after a while you still can't get accounts at Yeahmobi or Clickdealer let me know too and we'll make it happen.

Looking forward to updates!

Ok. So here we go. I have started multiple campaigns following the Appetizer. Still can't seem to get that elusive 1st conversion in mobile.

I would think with such a low payout that app installs would be easy to come by. Definitely not what I was expecting. So you can probably guess what my first goal is:

Goal: 1 conversion

So here is one campaign.

Offer: 360 Security
GEO: CA
Payout: .25

As you can see the payout is pretty low. I did not realize that the different 360 Security offers for different countries had overlapping countries and I applied to one with the largest amount of countries. Canada was in that one but the other Canada link has payout of .70. Waiting on approval for that one now.

This is about 4 days of traffic. I started with SmartCPM and did not get much traffic. So I switched to flat CPM.

Spend: $34.95
Revenue: $0.00

Here are the individual campaign stats.

I paused the Wifi App and the Mobile App campaigns since they had no conversions. Some placements were way over 3x spend but they were not over 1/3 of budget. Most was spread over top 10 or so.

Wifi Site and Mobile Site are a long way from the $15 spend so I will let those go longer.

Here are the banners. The first one is a text animation that says different text on each of the 3 frames. The rest are static.

Next steps

-Increase bids to get more traffic.
-Get approved for CA link with higher payout.
-Work on improving angles and banners to increase CTR.

Ok. Thanks Amy. Wow, I appreciate your help. I will do that.

You're running 360? Please do something for me right away: Read the offer description carefully, as well as ask your AM whether the advertiser requires a minimum User Retention Rate (RR) in order to pay for conversions. I have friends that have had all their leads deleted due to RR being too low. In these cases the advertiser has the final say because we won't have access to stats on RR. Right now you're not generating a lot of leads yet, but just something to keep in mind. If you do want to continue running traffic, generate limited leads (10-20) first, then wait a week and ask your AM to confirm RR before continuing (they need to see 7 days of data to determine RR).

I LOVE how simple and concise your banners are! Now try to add some element that would draw people's eyes to the banners in the first place. Try animation or eye-catching images.

And you don't really need to make 8 banners from one angle at the start. Try to come up with at LEAST 5 more angles, and make 3 banners from each (all different headlines). Do some research on WHY people would want to download the app. There are different phone symptoms that could indicate the presence of viruses, and "Phone slow?" is only one of them.

I've checked the ranking trends graph in appannie and it looks promising. Your "Next Steps" sound great. Good luck!

Amy, I appreciate your help and tips and reading through my thread. Yeah, there is a Retention Rate on the 360 offer. I was not sure if that was something that was normal or not. I have seen it on some other offers that I was looking through as well.

I will take your advice and only send a few leads to see how everything goes first.

Yeah, I have been reconsidering making 8 banners for 1 angle for my campaigns. It takes me way too much time it seems. Not really to make them but to come up with different designs so they are not all alike. I have been just following designs of other banners I have seen.

I will see about testing other angles at the start to see if the problem is with the banner design or the angle.

Still no traction on the 360 Security offer. I increased the bids multiple times and just can't seem to get any traffic on the WifiSite or the MobileSite (especially with this one).

My CPM bid on Mobile Site is now $7 and traffic is still just dribbling in at pennies per day.

My CPM bid on Wifi Site is also $7 and has a little more traffic but still only spending a couple of dollars per day.

I'm thinking I will just kill this campaign and create another one for a different GEO. I have to send in my banners to get all of them approved so I will work on more with different angles to increase my CTR.

Here are the stats for the campaign.

Total Spend: $41.05
Total Revenue: $0.00

Meanwhile I have reached my first goal of 1 conversion on another campaign I am running. It took about $55 in spend to get the $0.17 conversion but hey I can check that one off my list. However, I did kill that campaign.

Also I have been working on brainstorming angles, creating angles with the Life Force 8, 7 deadly sins and Caurmen's 21 angles formula. That is helping me with my thought process.

Now I need to get a little more organized with this Follow Along. I'll get into a groove eventually.

Next goal: $5 revenue for 1 day.

Get 1st conversion - completed

Nice Follow Along. Just started this same journey myself. Still learning the tracking thing. What tracking platform do you use? I'm thinking about going with Adsbridge as it is $19/monthly they have templates you can edit for landing pages. Think this is a good newbie & time saving place to start with tracking. What are your thoughts?

Thanks. I am not using any tracking for my mobile campaigns at the moment. I am just following the Appetizer and doing all tracking on the traffic source. I have used prosper202 mostly in the past. I have heard good things about adsbridge although I have not used it myself. Most people here seem to lean toward Voluum or Thrive though it seems. I will likely give Voluum a go when I start using a tracker.

Here is another campaign that I started. I decided to use animations on all of the banners except 2. The animations are blinking buttons for 4 of them.

The eyes on the other two banners move from left to right, imitating something I found spying.

I also did half of the banners in English and the other half in Hindi to see which ones do better. Although there were no clear winners as far as conversions, the CTRs on the Hindi banners were usually better than their corresponding English banners.

This campaign got 5 conversions but the advertiser paused the offer today.

Offer: Flipkart
GEO: India
Payout: 0.35
Traffic Source: Decisive

Total Spend: $25.23
Total Revenue: $1.75

Here are the banners.

Here are the campaign spends. I did not get much traffic with the Mobile Site or the WIFI Site campaigns.

Next Steps

1) Create more campaigns on Decisive and then on Go2mobi.
2) Learn Photoshop. I downloaded a trial of Photoshop, so making animated banners should be faster as I learn to use that. I have been using Paint.net.
3) Find more offers to promote.

Nice tip on trying Hindi! I've always just used English - will remember to split-test with Hindi next time I try an Indian offer!

Photoshop is actually extremely easy to use if all you want to do is make simple-looking banners - I mean of course you can use it to do really advanced and impressive stuff as well, but for our purposes, simple and amateurish is often enough (and even better than professional-looking banners in terms of performance!) For a quick and dirty tutorial check out this vid:

There are also lots of threads around with tips on how to make great banners with high CTR/CR so be sure to check out a few of those as well.

Good luck on finding your next offer(s) to promote!

So I have been testing more campaigns. Nothing seems to work though. I am not talking about profits, just conversions. Not sure if I am not hitting the right GEOs or if I am pushing tired offers or what. I will just keep trying different offers and GEOs until something works.

Not sure what I should expect with CTRs. Right now they are all over the place even with the same banners. I have banners in one camp with 0.25% CTR on Mobile Site and 6.1% on Wifi Site with the same banners. Not sure if that tells me my banners are okay but the file size is too large or what.

Smart CPM really irritates me so I turned it off and I just use Manual CPM now. Traffic is flowing much better this way.

Anyway here are some stats.

Offer: GO SMS Pro
GEO: Australia
Payout: 0.65
Traffic Source: Decisive

Total Spend: $39.83
Total Revenue: $0.00

Here are the campaign stats:

Here are the banners. All of these were animated except one. Some had different text on each frame and some had blinking icons.

Another campaign. I am laying it all out here. If anyone here wants to copy campaigns that make no money. Here you go. My follow along if full of them.

Offer: Leo Privacy Guard
GEO: Indonesia
Payout: 0.33
Traffic Source: Decisive

Total Spend: $29.33
Total Revenue: $0.33

Here are the campaign stats

Size:	43.6 KB

Here are the banners. These are the English versions. They were translated into Indonesian. All of these had either a flashing background or blinking buttons.

Other Thoughts: So I downloaded the Photoshop trial and have been using it. Man it makes things so much easier when I am making animated banners. It has its quirks. Some things are easier in Paint.net, but as a whole I am loving it right now. It makes editing texts so much easier as well.

Now I am creating some campaigns on Go2Mobi to see how things go with that. I am learning a lot and trying to make sure that everyday I progress and learn more. I have found that it is better to take small steps everyday than to take a giant leap every once in a while.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for the video. I will definitely check that out. I am surprisingly loving Photoshop. I thought it would be more complicated to learn. It is not very intuitive and I had to read a tutorial on how to do simple stuff like copying a layer to another image, but it's not too hard once you know where everything is.

I will also take your advice and look around the forum to see how to increase my CTR and CR as well, because it is not too good right now. Thanks for your help.

From my experience Australia geo is very expensive. Have you tried pop traffic for app installs?

09-11-2015 07:25 PM #15 anuj92 (Member)

Definitely try go2mobi, I've found their traffic to be better than decisive.

Good fit for your privacy/security banners too

Thanks for the follow along.

Right, I am noticing that as well from running this campaign. I have not tried any pop traffic. None of the offers, except one maybe, that I have run so far allow pop traffic. I am just sticking to display and app traffic at the moment.

Thanks, I am definitely testing Go2mobi as well. Their platform is a little harder to separate the Wifi and Mobile traffic. I initially tried to do it the same way as Decisive with 4 campaigns, but their $20/day minimum budget meant I was running through money too fast. My most recent campaign, I just set up one keeping an eye on all the variables.

The reporting system at Go2mobi is excellent, so it's not as much of a problem to run carrier and WiFi traffic together. You can still drill down into the variables to optimize your campaigns.
